2.10 yo bum sliding / rocking and in a trance

My DD used to do this when a lot younger and in her high chair or pushchair, when she was tired. Sort of rocking on her bum / sliding up and down, and staring in to the middle distance. She has not done it for over a year as far as I am (was) aware... until her nursery mentioned it to me last week. She goes to nursery three days a week. They said she has always done it on and off but they can usually distract her and stop her doing it. But apparently for the last couple of weeks she has been do been doing it a lot more, goes in to a sort of trance and can not be distracted from doing it. they are concerned and think it is odd.

I am sure it is a comfort thing - but, yes, a little odd???

Her DT brothers have been in and out of hospital recently (all ok now) and she has not been sleeping great (because DTs have not been sleeping great, yawn). Things are nearly back to normal now - but I think this upset to the usual run of the mill routine has meant she has been doing this more often - but even so, is it something to be worried about?

Nursery staff have not seen a child do this before and think I should seek advice from GP or HV - but I am not really sure what I want a GP/HV to do??? Is it an indication of a anxious / sad DD that I need to be taking some action about? At a loss of what to do really - if anything!

Any one else's DCs done anything similar?

Sorry for rambling and any typos - hands full!!

DD (5) used to something similar when she was tired/bored/unsettled etc - it's hard to explain but she would sort of clench and unclench herself so if she was sitting in a pushchair or highchair it would look like she was moving herself up and down - don't know if that makes sense sorry! But it was definitely a comfort thing. She would do the trance thing too, especially if she was very tired, and I've seen other DC do similar. I Don't think you should be rushing to seek medical advice over DD, sounds like nursery are being over cautious tbh! It can take some children a bit longer to settle back down after changes in routine, especially if they've gone on for more than a couple of days. She'll probably calm down just in time for Christmas Xmas Grin
Glad to hear your dt boys are doing better Xmas Smile

Ha ! yes, Xmas will be another 'disruption'!! Yes, you describe it perfectly. I will see if it settles down. It is reassuring to hear other DC do it too and it is not something as odd as nursery staff think it is!

My daughter did something very similar from about the age of 6-7 months. Usually when tired or anxious. She could be distracted out of it but would then return to it as soon as the distraction was over. Saw someone about it and was told it was basically masturbation/ self stimulation and that if it continued as she got older just to re-inforce that she should do it when on her own and in private. She is 8 now and I never actually see her doing it these days !

Oh! Perhaps the nursery staff think this ans that's why they have raised it with me. So I need to so anything about it at my DD's age? 3 in Feb.

Can I ask you both at what age your DD's stopped doing it?
