Steering a micro scooter?

My 2 and 8 month old twins have mini micro scooters and unlike every other child within a playground radius, they seem to be utterly incapable of learning to steer. I suspect it is probably because they don't use them daily because its tricky for me to take them out on my own with our little baby in tow too, but I've tried one to one coaching and they just don't seem to be getting it. My daughter has no staying power whatsoever and just wants to give up at the first hurdle. My little boy is pretty good at having a go in a straight line but hops off and lifts it to change direction. Does this steering seem to come naturally to other toddlers or do we have any other steeringly challenged buddies out there? Thanks j

They are still very little. DD2 is the same age and can do it but most of her peers can't. You are probably comparing them with older kids, and expecting a bit too much of them.
And yes kids who do it a lot would be better, like anything it needs practice.

My DD had exactly the same problem when she first got hers (I think partly because before the micro scooter she had another one that you steered conventionally, i.e. with the handlebars). She just used to go forward, stop, turn the scooter round and then carry on - it was quite funny really! But she got the hang of it eventually and now she's a pro - so I wouldn't worry, they'll pick it up soon enough.

Our DD learned but it took a long time. She is nearly 3 and got the scooter in the spring, so about the same age as your twins. I think it helped when her daddy walked alongside, with her hands on the handlebars and his hands over her hands, steering. Then she could feel how he applied the pressure and what that did to the scooter. But mostly practice, practice, practice!

My dd was the same, used to stop and move it to change direction..she was probably about 2.8/9 when se got the hang of it having had it for ages one day it just seemed to click..
We just let her get on with it and she eventually figured it out..now if only I could get her to look where she is going we'll be laughing Grin

Are their scooters new? as they are stiff to steer when new, my boy is 3 now but was 18 months when we got him his first mini micro and I made his big sisters wear it in a bit so the steering wasnt as stiff, that might help them?

Thanks folks. Good to know they're not alone. theyre secondhand scooters but suspect we will just need to persevere :)

Just found this thread. We're in the same boat. Bought a second hand one off eBay and my DD aged 3, is not keen. I have googled on the subject and apparently there is some sort of clip or u-bend underneath the t-bar which controls the steering. This can rust and need replacing, which if yours are second hand, may be worth checking?

I have heard that it takes practice so I guess that's what we'll do!!
