ARE YOU STILL HAPPY WITH THE NAME YOU CHOSE?

DD is now 9 weeks old and I'm really not sure about the name we've given her. It took three weeks to come up with a name and I felt very hormonal, disorganised and hassled at the time and enormous pressure from everyone to name her. We eventually chose a long name which can be shortened a variety of ways, but I'm increasingly unsure about it in all it's options.
Has anyone else had similar experiences? might it grow on me, or should I change it now before she learns it herself. How easy is it to change their name once registered? Does anyone have any suggestions, what I really wanted was a two syllable name ending in 'a'; like anna, or emma etc??

My DS is called Brodie which had always been my first choice. It is quite uncommon in children but am aware of 5 dogs with the name Brodie !!!!!!!!!!! Wouldn't change it though!

Love my ds's names.

Love Ava but if I had a girl she would have been Anna.

SIL has just called her dd Daisie which I think is hideous.

I'd change it if you feel unhappy - deffo.

i love my kids names!michael, chloe, amelia, nathaniel and alyssa.
wanted to call alyssa pheobe but dh didnt like it,so got a rescue cat and renamed her from duchess to pheobe!!
am ttc and got names already!!!

jamsam · 04/04/2006 14:12

if the parents really want to change it then why not???
in my mums family it is normal to be called by a middle name or nickname. i have a 92 year old great aunt called lala, mainly because as a child she couldnt say lillian!.
i wish i had been more original and gone for the names i wanted instead of bending to exp's and his families choice, but at 5 and6 i cant change them now!!!

Utopia · 04/04/2006 14:55

Toby, Archie and Tabitha - love them all.

Toby wasn't even on the top 10 list
Archie was always going to be Archie
Tabitha was always Pheoebe until she was about 5 seconds old!

malodorantemelly · 04/04/2006 15:02

haven't read it all, but you can change it up to a year after her birth I think, even when registered, but I would do it sooner rather than later.

I love all of ours, all chosen long before they were born as we knew sex. But I wasn't sure about ds2 as dh named him, although I love it now. and i wouldn't have used it if I really hated it, I was just a little unsure.. even posted a question on here about it.

shellybelly · 04/04/2006 15:10

My DD's (now 11 years old) name is Emily with Rose as her middle name which at the time when I called her it was quite unique. (Emily was not but the combination of Emily and Rose was). I had already chosen Emily but Rose just popped into my head when I took my first look at her. I did notice that soon after her birth alot of mums in my area started using the same name combination, maybe they had been looking in the birth announcements for inspiration and had seen DD. Then I noticed that Caroline Quentin the comedienne later named her newborn DD the same which made me really happy that a celeb had the same taste as me. Anyway I'm thrilled with my DD name (she's now 11) it really suits her and I'm happy with the name I chose although I'm tearing my hair out at the moment with her behaviour but thats another story altogether (see my seperate thread). I love all the names on here, Amber are you the same lady who was going to name your DD by your neice's middle name. If so stick to your guns and call your DD whatever you like. Personally I'd be quite flattered if a relative wanted to use my DD middle name as a first name or vice versa. Many of my friends have chosen Rose as middle names for their girls and I feel flattered that they like the name so much.

amyjade · 04/04/2006 15:32

Freya Rose, Loved the name Freya the first moment i heard it.

Libby Hope, very meaningful middle name !!

Jabberwocky, Aiden was a character in Sex and the City, wasn't he? That would have pushed it up the popularity stakes!

heymissymum · 05/04/2006 02:14

haven't read all of this but you can change the name of your child so long as it is within the first year since you registered birth. I know because a friend recently did it or rather added a name for her dd as it was the name she always wanted but family pressure and post pregnancy hormones meant she didn't put it down when registering baby. We only had two options which we agreed before dd was born, Stefan if we had a boy and Zahra (arabic spelling silent h) and Zahra it is and very very happy with it!!Smile

jabberwocky · 05/04/2006 13:09

I know cm, just didn't realize his character would be so popular. We actually picked the name because of St. Aiden of Ferns. Had no idea so many people watched Sex and the City.Sad

chipmonkey · 05/04/2006 15:59

The thing is, jw, you have to be careful. For every one person who openly watches SITC, there are 10 in the closet!Grin

nooka · 05/04/2006 22:23

I wouldn't worry too much about popular names - my dh had the most popular name in the year he was born, but never met another kid with his name until university - when there were loads! My dd's shortened name is very popular (and has been for a while, I think) but she is very happy about this. I'm glad that her proper name is more unusual though. ds is the other way around, as the baby form of his name became very popular a little while back, even though his name was unusual when he was born. So you never can tell.

zoeuk1 · 06/04/2006 18:05

hi all. im a new member here and thought id butt-in! all this talk of names just reminded me of something. the other day i was looking in the local paper at the annual baby competition and some of the names made me gasp out loud! the worst one had to be the little girl called chardonai. thank god most people on here have given their children lovely names!

jabberwocky · 06/04/2006 19:51

lol, chipmonkey! I never thought about it that way.

chipmonkey · 06/04/2006 23:50

Jabberwocky, why St Aiden of Ferns? Do you have Irish connections? I drive through Ferns on the way to visit my Mum.

MeggLeVache · 06/04/2006 23:59

Yes, very happy. Like dit at first but did wonder if ds would ever suit his name and he absolutely does.

I was reading a guest book of the local public Farm for kids, there was an entry from Dazzle & Blaze (two girls)- honestly Smile

jabberwocky · 07/04/2006 02:27

My family is of Irish descent and I have always been interested in Celtic Christianity. Plus, Aiden of Ferns had connections to spiritual leaders named David and Malcolm, both family names on dh's side. So, it just seemed to really fit us. It's kind of funny really. We discussed, and I'm not exagerating, around 30 names with Aiden finally winning out. Ironic, isn't it?
