asking after the deed is done - toilet training.

my ds is coping very well with toilet training - staying dry no problem and using big toilet to do pees and poos but we are still having accidents in his pants regarding poos. The problem is he will poo in his pants then tell me and run to the toilet. He is nearly three years old. He has no problem with constipation etc but I can't get him to understand that he can't poo his pants. Have tried buying character pants, tried star charts, tried getting him to clean mess but to no avail. He really is trying but I firmly believe he thinks it is okay to poo then go to the loo or else he has no control. Even as a tot I have never seen him anticipate needing to go whereas my other one used to pause in his tracks, look very concentrated then go bright red and squirmy. Seems like if I am lucky and manage to get him to poo on the loo which he gladly does, then he will be clean all day, but if I don't ask he won't ask till the deed is done. Any ideas? Perhaps I need him to have more control in deciding when to go.

I rewarded mine with chocolate whenever he got to the loo on time for poops. Amazing how much better his bowel control became after that.

ds has no real pattern for poos but I usually ask him if he wants to sit on the loo early evening. He loves this and is quite happy to sit there for ages as he loves me reading to him and we sit and look at books. He's very proud and I lavish huge love and pride when he poos so there is no problem there. There just seems to be this missing link like yes he will poo in toilet but if he needs to go when he is not on the loo he will just poo in his pants first then go to the toilet. We can go for a week without an accident but I feel there's just this missing link which will always catch us unaware until he realises that he can't poo in his pants.
