0.4 Centile for Height

My ds just had his 12 month review and is measuring 0.4 centile for height (-4 corrected), which based on his actual age is just below 0.4. He's consistently charted on the 0.4, so is following the curve but my gut instinct is to be very worried, esp now that he'll be measured based on his actual age going forward. The HV seemed unconcerned but I'm wondering if it could be a sign of an underlying problem. Should I be pushing for a paediatric referral?

He was slow to regain birthweight (took 4 weeks) but quickly settled on the 9th centile for weight. Any thoughts/experiences would be welcome!

I can't remember the numbers (is 0.4 the lowest line on the chart) but ds was born on the 1nd line dropped way below it then once his feeding issues were cleared up he created his own line about 1cm underneath the lowest line on the chart.

He's now 8 and perfectly healthy though a very fussy water. He wears age 5 clothes.

Sleepwhenidie just to reassure you regarding sport, my DS is extremely sporty, regardless of his size. He finds being small and light helps him with agility, and he plays fly half at rugby, getting lots of tries as he is near impossible to tackle (when they go to tackle him he dodges and is generally not where they think he'll be).
He is 11, in age 8 clothes (often turned up/taken in a bit), but is socially confident, physically adept, and happy both in and out of school.

I was in class recently for an open morning and one of the tall kids was a bit thrown that ds knew all the words in a reading test the teacher was doing She actually said 'how come 'littleheadinhands'knows them all already.' She had assumed that because he is the smallest he should know the least Grin

Thanks imysparetime and headinhands, our ds2 is very capable and bright, certainly has a huge personality. We are leaning towards going for the gh but it is a difficult decision, you hear so many stories of tiny children suddenly having huge growth spurts at puberty, or of children like yours who are perfectly confident and happy, but then wonder what ds2's view will be when he is much older, as a noticeably short adult would he thank us, curse us or ot be bothered either way if we didn't give GH?

Re the reading headinhands, i guess children assume small means young, not totally unreasonably. Comes back a bit to peers treating smaller one like a baby although I am sure they would realise quite quickly that they aren't (babies)!

My DD2 was a very small reception child and was treated like a baby, carried round by the older ones in the playground etc. TBH I don't think it did her any harm. All children are different from their peers in some way and she is quick to tell people if they assume she is younger than she is.

It's so important that bone age is checked as occasionally it can be advanced in short children which means they drop off their growth when there bone fuse early. So they'll appear to be following their curve but stop growing young and not make adult stature. Bone age can be slowed down if caught before puberty, so it needs assessing.

Hi all

I know this is a very old post ok it just wondering what the height outcomes were for your kids. My son is 10 months and on 0.4th centile and dietician keeps saying he's not growing, despite him following the curve. I personally don't think she ever measures him properly as he never stretches his legs out when you want him to. Dietician has advised that on my next paediatrician visit I discuss getting growth hormones checked.

I need some height success stories lol.

Hi my DS is coming up 3 and is about the 10-15th centile for height, at the 2 year check he was on the 2nd centile. His dad is 5’7 and I’m 5’6 so it’s not that we were expecting him to be tall! But he is getting a little higher on the charts. So your little one may still go up. I’m just worried that his 4 month old sister will be massive compared to him! She’s 60th for height at the moment. I’m not sure DS was ever that!! Don’t worry too much, they have Growth spurts all over the place :)

My daughter, aged 12+ months, falls below the 0.4th percentile for both weight and height. While her developmental progress is excellent, I am unsure whether to pursue a referral to a pediatrician, despite the health visitor's suggestion that this is normal given my petite stature.
