Any ideas on how to baby proof patio doors, Dd who is a very mobile nearly one year tries to leap out of them whenecer they are open straight onto the patio! And what with warmer weather coming I have no idea what to do!! Help

you can get one of those play pen things that can be a play pen OR really long 'stair' gate OR a fire guard.

Not as much as changing your patio doors (which is what we are going to have to do- to french doors with a small window opening on the side) to keep ds1 off the patio and (2) balconies.

Can you fix it ajar ? We have a bolt at the top to secure ours shut but I'm sure you could put an extra socket a little way along the top frame, just allowing a gap too narrow for her to squeeze through, and shoot the bolt into it. Alternatively find a wedge for the runner at the bottom to limit how far it opens.

Actually at the moment all three doors have lock things in that mean the patio door can be opened by a minute amount and locked in that position. It's pointless and I don't trust ds1 not to yank the door open, but it might be an option for you.

calpopscalum · 23/03/2006 21:32

could you jsut open 1 and have an extendable normal stair gate in place for the gap? Or have a soft thing on the patio for soft landings on the other side?

Can you place a piece of furniture in the front of it e.g. toybox?

Believe me, i had all these worries when we moved to our childunfriendly house we have now. But before you know it they've grown out of this stage, and you're more than happy to trust them running in and out of the garden, mastering steps with skill etc.

Hi, I have patio doors with stairs at them and my DD's were forever trying to get out. Was always worried during the spring/summer that they would fall and injure themselves. I put a toy box in front of the doors although dd2 had a good attempt at climing over it. The phase will be past really soon and she will be going out into the garden like a pro.

crunchie · 23/03/2006 21:36

Whay do you need to babyproof them? Sorry am I being thick here? If they are open then your child will want to go out, do you want them open but to stop said chid going on a patio? What is wrong with a patio?

getbakainyourjimjams · 23/03/2006 21:41

Don't know about Georgie's mum but 2 of our patio doors open onto balconies and I don;t trust ds1 on them. Actually summer is a total nightmare here during school holidays as there are only 2 windows in the entire house that I can open safely (in ds2's room and ds3's room). We swelter. If I win the lottery I'll be changing the patio doors :o.

DD cant walk yet and i dont want her falling head first onto the patio!!

have tried normal stair gate but it wont fit and have tried box but she flings herself over it!

I've got a floor to ceiling length of voile-type curtaining, hemmed at the top and bottom with net curtain wire threaded through and fastened to either end. You can unhook it easily if you want to go out, but it stopped my kids going outwhen they were little (and flies from coming in!).
