How old for tying laces?

How old were your dd's/ds's when they learnt to tie their shoe laces?

We have just been told we have a week to learn dd to fasten them or she can't take her walking boots (which she has now panned in) with her on the walking holiday.

I think it very much depends on the child. My dd learnt to do it with no help by 6 but I'm pretty sure ds will take a lot longer than that. How old is your dd?

geekgrrl · 22/03/2006 16:50

6 but she only has one pair with laces so doesn't get much practice.
I taught myself when I was 4 or 5 - this was in the pre-velcro days (and in a kindergarten with a staff ratio of 1:15), needs must and all that!

Golly ds (now 12) was early at everything but laces were beyond him at 8 I think he could do them and very badly at that.
However dd (3)who has some motor delays and language delay can tie a lovely knot in hers...
It is a very weird thing to predict!

She is 6, there has been no mention whatsoever about this, they have also complained that the boots are too tight?????? I thought that was the idea with walking boots. I don't know who has said it but she has also said that they will get NO help with anything Shock she has also got a walking coat with a double zip that she sometimes struggles with.

OT taught ds at 6/7. His friend could do them from starting school at 4 1/2. It really is just a matter of practice time and again.

mythumbelinas · 22/03/2006 16:54

agree, depends on child, but i'd say about 5 years old .. also depends if they have shoes that have laces.
My dd1 could do it when she was 4 .. i was quite impressed, as only showed her once.

geekgrrl · 22/03/2006 16:56

Radley, that sounds very harsh. :( 6 year olds are still so little in many respects. Is this through school? They shouldn't be taking such young children if they're not prepared to help.

On the parenting course I am on, one of the mums was going to have this as her sons target for the week, but the pead there said he was too young as it's not usually learnt until about 8 and her son was 6.

Radley · 22/03/2006 17:03

Yes it is through school, I have no idea how many teachers are going, but I am not happy that they have only decided now. What if she doesn't graft it? she only has her new walking boots.

ALSO, on the list of things they have to take it does say walking boots and walking coat, surely they know that these items can be fiddly. I may have to go and have a word.

8 seems very late. We couldn't get any soccer boots without laces where we lived so he had to learn and can do his walking boots too , in fact they are easier because the laces are longer.

My eldest DS1 is nearly 9 and he cant do laces yet.I was a bit concerned until i read this!

nutcracker · 22/03/2006 17:09

I don't think the pead meant that it can't be done before 8 but that to have it as his task fot the week at age 6 might be setting him up to fail because some kids just can't at that age.

mumeeee · 22/03/2006 17:58

Six is a bit young some children can do them then but other chilfren can't do them untill they are 8.
DD3 is dyspraxic and didn't learn to tie her laces untill she was ten. When she was in year 3 we talked to her teacher about his and she said she had several childrenin the class who were still having trouble. The children wer aged 7 and 8

Kidstrack2 · 22/03/2006 18:08

my ds is 7 in June and can't do laces, he has one of those lace shoe things and can manage knots etc infact lots of knots no loops, i wasn't happy when ds started school as the teacher didn't help with zips, laces etc although ds still wears velcro shoes from clarks, as i would hate for him to struggle with laces when i'm not there to help, i think its a bit unrealistic to expect a 6yr old to do laces especially in boots!
