Calling parents of thumb suckers...

Having had a dummied DD and wanting to avoid it with DS as much as possible, I was just wondering what age they started thumb sucking?

DS will suck his fist occasionally at the moment, so I can see him finding his thumb eventually, just not really sure when they normally do.

ds is a thumb sucker (he was sucking his thumb at the first scan!) - he did have a dummy for a while, but I hate them and I think there is a difference - ds will run around without his thumb in his mouth, but I see loads of kids with this plastic thing apparently whelded to their mouths running around, playing etc.

my dd sucked her thumb within five mins of coming out.... so i put a dummy in and she accepted it, but now that she is 2yrs 4mths and im trying to wean her off the dummy shes starting to suck her thumb again.....

Can't remember when DS started thumb sucking - around a couple of months I think.

DD has been thumb sucing from about 8 weeks - she's 6 months now. It took her a little while to manage to control her thumb enough - before that she liked to suck our little finger, so we were glad when her co-ordination improved.

My DD never took to sucking her thumb unfortunately. But on the other hand, stops us worrying on how and when to stop her, as a friend of mines DD who is 10 has just had to have a brace fitted because she wouldn't stop sucking her thumb. The brace certainly stopped it!! it took her a few nights of crying to get the idea that the brace wasn't coming out and it was there to correct her teeth and more apparently to stop her sucking her thumb.

dd (now 3) and the baby I am expecting were both sucking thumbs on the scan photos!
DD has sucked her thumb from day 1 and has never been interested in a dummy even though I did try. She sucks her thumb until she falls asleep and then it comes out and she never sucks it during the day.

dd1 never had a dummy, when dd2 arrived she wanted one as the baby had one (dd1 was only 18 months) i wouldnt let her have one and she went on to pinch dd2's!dd2 then stopped having one and dd1 didnt want it then!but dd1 started sucking her thumb.hate to say this, but she is now 12 and when shes tired she has it in her mouth (although she doesnt suck it anymore!she just rubs it around in her mouth!)wish she would stop, but she wont!

ds started to suck his fist as soon as he found his hand; quickly followed by his thumb as soon as he found it. he's 3yo and still sucks it when tired or sad. i've never tried to stop him as i prefer it to a dummy and he gets so much comfort from it. dd 2months today is taking the same road; she's already found her fist a comfort.

dd had a dummy and at 4 months rejected it. About a week later she she discovered her thumb and still sucks it for comfort - bedtime, unhappy, tired etc. She's very nearly 5.

ds also had a dummy and rejected it at about 2 months and has never sucked his thumb, finger etc. But I saw him trying to suck his thumb in the scan (very late one)
