10-year old tantrums

How do I deal with these? Ignore as you would with a toddler, be sympathetic, or tell her to pull herself together?

Basically we have recently moved and DD has started a new school. She has made friends but is prone to throwing tantrums where she whines, screams at me at the top of her voice and even throws herself on the floor, usually when she is tired and/or anxious. Basically she resents having had to move and wants to be back at her old school. I usually tell her to go to her room and calm down but I must admit I am running out of sympathy. Surely she should be more resilient than this? She has even had several days off sick where she convinced me she was ill but when I eventually took her to the doctor's it turned out there was nothing really wrong with her.

DD2 who is 8 is having a much harder time settling in/making friends but is much more stoic. She only gets upset because her big sister is upset.

I think you should carry on telling her to go to her room but when she has calmed down make a point of being open to calmly discussing what she was upset about. If she gets upset again its back to her room and repeat.

She'll then get the message that she will get your attention far more effectively when she is calm.

Thank you, good to get some perspective. Smile
