Repetetive Movement Disorder (Rocking)

Hi,
I really hope someone can reassure me, I have been looking up my daughters problem on the internet and worrying myself silly. My 2yr 9month old daughter spends alot of time on her knees rocking from side to side. I would have to describe the movement as similar to if you were trying to spin a hoop on your hips when standing up. She has been doing this on and off for around 12 months, sometimes I think she's grown out of it and then a few weeks later she does it again. People stare at her if she does it in public. In every other sense her development seems completely normal. Has anyone else experienced this sort of problem? I mentioned it to my doctor but he didn't seem particularly interested.

If you're really worried you should get another medical opinion. That's what I would do. But if she's "normal" (whatever that means) in every other way I wouldn't be overly worried.

Firstly, looking up symptoms on the Internet isn't always a good thing - you can frighten yourself to death. Have a word with the HV and see what she says; if she thinks there's any reason to be concerned then see the GP.

I agree with BWW about the Internet.

My DD (almost 3 yrs) soes something similar, though not nearly as often as she uased to. When sitting in her car seat or pram she would straighten both legs out then bend the needs pulling about half way up to her chest then sparate the legs as she prought them back down, then straight forward again, and knees up again, and so on... We call it "pumping" and it drives me batty. I hate it hate it hate it. I can't stand when people have irritating repetitive habits, like pen taping, ar rocking back and forth when you are talking to them.

I never, however, considered it was cause to go to the doctor. She does do it much less now. I hope it is on the way out.

my 3 year old has always stretched to go to sleep - she pushes up against car restraints or highchair and it looks like she's constipated. i have never seen another child do it. my friend's child (now 5 and at school with no problems or concerns) used to throw herself on the floor on her side and looked like she was having a fit if you put something with sleeves on her. dd2 humps which is nice to see a 14 month old doing, especially to teddy.

I think they all have little things that are reassuring and comforting and wouldn't worry about it at all. The health visitor might be a better person to talk to as they are prob more aware of baby behaviour, think my gp can basically diagnose a cold or ear infection but he doesn't do behavioural idiosyncrasies.

Thank you for sharing experiences. I feel a little better about things and will perhaps consult health visitor - although I'm always worried that "professionals" will feel obligated to carry out tests and things that will cause stress rather than help.
