Nine months and not very mobile yet!

My nine month old is sitting up q.well and rolls over from her back to her front - but that's about it! I've just been on a site that suggests baby's should be crawling between 6-10 months - but my little one appears to be nowhere near ready! She isn't very mobile at all apart from the odd roll (and then she complains when she's stuck on her tummy)! What is "normal?" in regards to development, do things generally develop at differing paces for each child? Help!

she will crawl when she's ready. Its easy to look at sites like that and then worry. My DDs were early to do things but my nephew crawled late. He was 13 months old IIRC

katzg · 19/03/2006 21:51

In a couple of months time you will be cursing your baby moving! enjoy this stage it really doesn#t last long enough!

I (well DH) has spent the evening retrieving our DD2 from our friends hall and stopping her falling down the stairs!

Miaou · 19/03/2006 21:52

EmmaC, my dds never crawled at all, and didn't walk until they were 14 and 15 months respectively! Not all babies crawl - of those that don't, some will bottom-shuffle and others will find another way of moving around, but others still will just sit there!

Don't worry about what the books and the sites say - your dd hasn't read them and doesn't know any better Wink

Maddison · 19/03/2006 21:53

Hi Emma, a lady at our baby group has twin boys who were 1 last week, she says she can sit them on the floor and they won't move! I've never seen them crawl or anything! OTOH my DS1 was completely mobile at 9 months. I guess what I'm trying to say is I wouldn't worry, they all just develop at their own rate HTH

BettySpaghetti · 19/03/2006 21:53

My friends DS has just started crawling at 11 months. Until now hes been happy just sitting and wasn't getting at all frustrated by it, then , one day, he just crawled without warning!

All babies are different. Your DD may crawl a bit later than some babies but she might say her first word sooner or feed herself sooner.

ghosty · 19/03/2006 21:56

EmmaChall ... Hi Smile
Is the rest of your DD's development on course? I ask because my DD and DS were both late movers ...
DD didn't move until she was 10 months ... at all ... just sat there like a fat little buddha. She hated being on her tummy and just didn't get the hang of rolling at all.

At 10.5 months she started bum shuffling. She walked at 14.5 months ... but only mastered rolling at 12 months. Bizarrely when she started rolling she worked out how to crawl but she preferred to bum shuffle as she had her hands free.
She turned 2 in February and runs, climbs, dances, jumps ... she is talking and all that too.
All babies are different ... in order to have an 'average' you need to have some who do things early and some who do things late ... I like the fact that my children were late because that meant I had more time of putting them in one place and knowing they would stay there and not open bleach cupboards etc Grin
If you are worried about other aspects of her development then get her checked out ... to put your mind at rest. Smile

EmmaChall · 19/03/2006 21:57

Thanks all - she seems happy enough so I guess I am just worried - Plus I have just started working part-time and I think I am giving myself a hard time (not being here all the time to do everything with her is sooo hard)! - silly websites - not reading anything else!

Neither of my dd's crawled until they were 12m. My friend's dd (same age as my dd1) walked at 9m! So I know how you feel - my dd1 was sat there and watched as her friend cruised the floor!

EmmaChall · 19/03/2006 22:22

Her development seems ok aside from the moving thing! She babbles on and on (saying dadadad alot) - no mamama though - obviously her priorities are wrong! She's eating and sleeping v.well and her co-ordination is great (she picks things up/ tries to roll the ball back to you etc.) and responds to her name. So maybe she just likes sitting still?! She does lean when she wants to pick things up etc. but she won't go from sitting to her front/knees. When she rolls onto her tummy from her back she lifts her head and shuffles her knees a bit - but gets q.upset v.quickly and can't roll back onto her back or side. She also doesn't like putting much weight on her legs/feet when you hold her up in standing position on your lap (although she loves jumping in her door bouncer)! It's just so hard to know what's "normal!"

She sounds fab EC ... don't worry ... my DD sat and watched ALL her little friends crawl and then walk ... and she didn't get the hint ... one of them was walking before she even started bumshuffling. What was even stranger is that she was so much bigger than all the others, so there were these teeny dainty little tot toddling around and DD, nice and solid and dependable (lol Wink) twice the size, sitting in one spot ...
She did it when she was good and ready ... and to be honest, as a result she has had less nasty falls and bumps than early walkers because she had more spacial awareness by the time she did start walking ...
Well, that is my theory anyway, and I am sticking to it Grin

Filyjonk · 20/03/2006 07:00

my friens dd wasn't even sitting at 9 months. Then she walked at 11.5 months. Her speech is seriously advanced.

Don't worry, she sounds fine. Mention to your hv if you're worried but I'm sure she'll just reassure you.

anniebear · 20/03/2006 07:27

I think a lot of babies start crawling around 10 months, defo not 6!!! The odd very very early one may do

CorrieDale · 20/03/2006 14:11

I think we could almost have the same baby EC! DS can feed himself brilliantly, stands beautifully leaning onto me or the sofa, but just gets around by rolling, scutching and creeping. Can't change position between sitting and lying, and absolutely no notion of crawling! And not much language either to make up for it. I've been getting a bit of a complex about it; all my RL friends' babies are there or nearly there, and it does make you twitchy. Shall we make a resolution together? Our babies are fine and we do not need to worry about the books, websites or our friends' babies!!!! Repeat at least 10 times a day or whenever a wobble hits.

fredly · 20/03/2006 14:17

EC, my daughter at 9m could just about sit up and rolls over. She didn't crawl until 12m and walked at 14m. Don't worry and avoid comparing your daughter to other children, that's the best way to become neurotic Wink
And enjoy, once she walks she'll get into everything and you'lll wish she'd never started !

Orinoco · 20/03/2006 16:46

Emma she sounds like my dd's. My dd's started talking really early, but weren't very physical. In fact, dd1 could count to 10 before she could walk! Don't worry, she's just doing things in a different order - they'll all catch up by the time they're 4 or 5!

LipstickMum · 20/03/2006 16:59

Don't worry about it Emma. My dd sits up beautifully, is happy on her front, but not moving at all. It's bliss, no rushing around after a crawling child! My other dd was the same, didn't really crawl for very long and walked at about 14 months.

mcmudda · 20/03/2006 17:22

Emma - dd is 9 months too and she's not even rolling! Sits up fine and is miserable if she falls onto her front.

I thought my ds was slow to move when he rolled at 7 mths - I guess dd is just proving a point! If she's on her back she makes no attempt to roll - can't even get onto her side let alone all the way over. HV has no worries about her as everything else is fine ie dd can bear her own weight when you stand her up. She said some babies never crawl and go straight to cruising round the furniture.

Ds walked at 17.5 months btw!

jambot · 20/03/2006 20:12

My DD sat at 7 and a half months, only rolled over properly at 9 months and crawled just after 10 months. She's just over a year now and although not walking yet, she does everything but and can get up and down and across the room in lightning fast time. I don't know where some of these websites come with some of their ages for babies doing things. On some websites, especially U.S. ones, they made me feel there was something seriously wrong with DD. Only when she went to the Doctor for a check up for something that the Dr. said that she was more than happy with DD's progress and in her experience, most of her baby patients were crawling by 10 months on average.
Wouldn't worry at all for quite some time to come.

mcmudda · 21/03/2006 18:01

Just remembered I read something recently that babies on average are rolling/crawling etc months later because of the "back to sleep" campaign to prevent cot death.

Babies used to get more "tummy time" because they were often put to sleep on their fronts.

So it's not because they're unable, just lack of practice Smile

evansmummy · 21/03/2006 18:58

My ds didn't crawl til 11 months and now at 15 months is not walking. Make the most of it!

I have a firenfd whose dd didn't crawl til well after a year, so they really do do things at their own pace. Don't stress about it!

Anoah · 23/03/2006 10:53

My two older children both walked before they were 9 months old yet they were late talkers, both requiring speech therapy.

My third is 13 months old and not walking yet but man he talks for England.

I wonder if the late talking early walking and vice versa wives tale is true?

I wouldn't worry at all if he is only 9 months old.

Bozza · 23/03/2006 11:00

9 months is ok. My DS never crawled. DD crawled at 10 months. Both walked at 13 months. DN is 13 months and has been commando crawling for about 6 weeks.
