Underarm pick up

15 wo DD is only happy if i pick her up to help her stand by holding her under the arms. Started as pulling to sit up but that was outdated the day i ordered the bumbo, now it's all about the standing. I just worry if this is good for her? Can i hurt/harm her by pulling her up under the arms all the time?

Thanks for putting up with my paranoia.

It's very unlikely that you're doing any harm or hurt (she'd let you know pretty sharpish about the hurt. Smile )

You're much better doing it the way you are than using her hands to take her weight at this stage. My sister is an occupational therapist and has some horror stories about small babies / children being picked-up or swung by their hands - under-arm is certainly the way she recommended for me.

Oh, and congratulations!

Thank you, good to know. Now we can play the game a few thousand more times!

Quick hijack - what can happen if you lift children by their hands? DH sometimes lifts our DDs by their hands and swings them a bit, I always tell him to stop as I'm worried it could damage their shoulders but I didn't know if that's true or just over-worrying.

it can pull their elbows when their elbow sort of pops partially out and it's a trip to a&e to sort out

Some children are more prone to pulled elbow than others. It doesn't mean you should never do it though. DS has had a pulled elbow at least 3 times and we saw the children's A&E consultant about it in the end. He said "not to wrap him in cotton wool" and not to worry about it - they grow out of it once their bones have solidified a bit more. At 2.8 y.o. DS hasn't had it for at least 9 months now.
