Hi, my DS is 4 in December and ever since he could wlak and talk he has been crazy about animals. First it was farm animals and countless visits to the farm, it then progressed to wild animals. He lives, eats and breathes animals. He has baskets of animals toys which he plays with all day every day. It is quite amazing to watch how many different scenarios he can make up wth his animals. He never gets bored of them. He loves going to the farm, zoo, various wildlife parks etc. My DH and I have been wondering if we should really be encouraging other forms of play. He loves to read but is not interested in puzzles, board games or anything else. If we get his wooden train set out, we build the track and then his animals are placed all over it. If we buils structures with his wooden blocks they become enclosures for his animals. He has all kinds of imaginary animal friends but he says they are pretend and not real, so we are not too worried about that. He is developing and thriving as he should be, shoudl we be worried?? Should we be encouraging him away from animals, insisting on other play themes? He says he wants to be a vet when he is grown up, maybe animals will be his love and passion, so should we leave him alone? Any thoughts or soes anyone have a similar situation with cars or trains? Thank you :)

Ds1 had an animal phase. So much nicer than the Marvel phase he's had for the past two years Grin

We still have enormous amounts of animals from the elc. Used to be able to buy tins of say, farm animals, polar animals etc.

We left our ds to it. Not doing any harm and if he's happy then he can learn while playing too.

Hi Lady. My DSs are older now but we had the same with matchbox cars. Every other toy just got turned into a garage or a car show. Grin Wooden blocks made tracks for the cars......

They still love cars now, but did discover football at about age 6. So now it's cars and football. Smile

I would say not to worry, in a year's time he will be at school and exposed to lots of interesting stuff that may take his fancy. He sounds lovely.

I'd just be glad that he's got such a lovely interest. One of mine loves motorbikes :(

I was your son! my friend says I am the only person she knew at 4 years old running around saying "I want to be a vet!" who was still saying the same thing 10/15/20+ years later. I am now a vet and although the profession isn't everything I wanted I am thankful I had and still have such a passion. He'll be fine. Also, there are hardly any male vet students so he'll be worshipped by hundreds of girls and be very successful in the field if he doesn't change his mind!

In a word, no. Sounds like he's a happy, imaginative little chap who's found something to be passionate about. Go him and go you for encouraging him.
