is weaning causing my baby's huge number of dirty nappies?

Reposting this, as it only got one repsonse in 'Weaning'. My FF baby is five months and three weeks, and we've been giving him small amounts of pureed fruit and vegetables and baby rice twice a day for the last ten days or so. For the past five days, his number of dirty nappies per day has gone up from one or two to seven to ten - some look normal, others are quite wet, and some are just tiny little liquid squirts.

My health visitor says it's teething causing this (no sign of anything yet, but lots of drooling and finger-chewing for some time), and that the weaning is only a coincidence, but I'm not entirely convinced. I have cut down on the purees today and yesterday (just some mashed banana with baby porridge at breakfast time), but the nappies are just as numerous. Otherwise, he's taking his bottles as usual, and sleeping normally enough.

Any thoughts? Should I take him to the doctor?

DD2 is like this at the moment and she's coming up 8 months. Suddenly every nappy is a dirty one in a variety of types :o

I don't know whether it's solids or teething or what but I think it's pretty normal and I wouldn't worry about it.

I could have written this post exactly! Only difference being after the increase of wet pooey nappies we stopped with the puréed but it dudn't stop the endless pooing! The colour was different and they were more liquidy but that was it. Currently he's being prescribed non cows milk formula to see if he's developed an allergy to cow's milk.

Oh, and my DS DID teethe just before this started, at just under 5months (he's also 5 months 3 weeks).

DD is 10.5mo and when we started weaning her her poos became less frequent and much firmer - bit like consistency of playdough!!! It went on like this for 1-2 weeks and then settled down to 1, maybe 2 a day. And not so 'solid' like.

She cut her bottom teeth at 9mo and the top 2 came through about 1-2 weeks ago. Both times, for about a week before her nappies got really 'wet' and we had several a day. Although not as many as 7-10! They were almost slimy. Figured it was to do with the amount of saliva she was producing/swallowing.

Can you feel something like a pin-prick on the bottom gum? Or if you can easily look in, it looks like a greyish stripe (kind of like the ribbons of grey fat in a steak!!). I could feel dd's but I saw them lying there when she was opening her mouth for some food.

That being said, 7-10 poos is quite a lot. Might be worth considering lactose intolerance. Thought you'd gave noticed it before now though off DC is ff from birth?

Hope it's a painless time for you if it is teething. My DD got by on a few calpol doses and a good, cold teething ring.

I found weaning made more dirty nappies; teething made more nappy rash (something to do with bring more acidic??), not noticeably more dirty nappies

Thanks, guys. To be honest, lactose intolerance hadn't even occurred to me - yes, he's essentially been formula-fed since birth, as my milk never came in, and we've always used the same brand and the same pre-mixed variety. The only time he's had any nappy explosions before now was when he was briefly on antibiotics, but that was over two months ago now...

Lactose intolerance can come (and go) at any time according to my dr. Getting him to drink more than 60ml is proving a challenge though...
