Won't drink his formula

Hi all,

Was hoping someone could give me a bit of advice. My 8 month old seems to have gone off his bottles over the past few days.

I am lucky if I am able to get 12 -13oz in him. He used to regualry guzzel down at least 24oz per day as well as his food. We have not changed the amount of food that he is eating so am not sure what it is.

He must be hungry, especially after sleepign 12 hours at night and he still just shakes his head and will not open his mouth.

I am panicking as I do not know how to get his milk in him. I have tried putting it in his sippy cup which he drinks his juice out of no problem, but he will not have it. I am at my wits end.

Please help.

Thanks
Paula

Is he teething? Maybe his mouth hurts?...Sorry he's being such an annoying wee man!

edodgy · 16/03/2006 19:13

I assume he's already on the fastest teats? If not this could be the problem.

DS2 (11 mths) virtually went off his milk when we started food. his Grandma has discovered that it is great fun to give it to him with a straw - he drinks the lot!!!

PaulaP · 16/03/2006 19:34

Yes he is on the fastest teats - sometimes I think even this is not fast enough for him - he has been on the fastest teats since about 4 months.

I can only presume he is teething, but is not showing much signs of teething. He does put everything in his mouth, but no more than normal. He will drink his juice no problem and is still eating his food - although is being a bit of a pain with his porrige in the morning, but everything else throughout the day is fine - except his bottles.

I have tried a straw today and put it in his mouth but he just stared at me and did not know what to do - I will persever with the straw as well and hopefullyhe will get the hang of it.

i know his still quite young but what about a sippy cup?

Nemo1977 · 17/03/2006 12:57

I would give him yoghurts and other dairy products at this age like cheese. some babies jst dont like milk..he is probably going through a phase.

Kelly1978 · 17/03/2006 13:02

get soem milk in a carton with a straw, so u can squeeze it to show him how to use the straw if you want him to learn. I agree though, he doesn't need it if you can make up for it in other foods. My older two went straight off milk once they had been weaned for a bit.

Paula, On and off since he was born I've had trouble getting ds to drink his formula. Some days he's fine but usually he won';t drink much at all. I'm lucky if he drinks 12 ozs. He's 8 months now and is enjoying food - he looks well and is very happy. I am worried about the lack of fluid intake though (he won;t drink water). I haven't really got any advice - just wanted to let you know you're not alone.

PaulaP · 17/03/2006 17:42

Thanks for all your replies - Well today Thomas has not taken any of his bottles - he is refusing point blank - I don't want to force him as I don't want to give him a phobia. I have tried giving him his milk in his sippy which he takes well with juice but have not had any luck. I am worried about him getting constipated as he is prone to constipation.

I spoke to the HV today and she has put my mind at ease and says if he does not want his milk he does not want it - She has suggested giving him yogurts, cheese etc for the dairy and to try and get more liquid in him by giving him frozen juice (ice pops etc), I have also tried giving him some jelly as it is made up of a lot of water - he did not seem happy with it - probably the texture, but I am going to persever to try and get more liquids in him that way.

I am also going to make up some potatoes over the weekend and mash them with some of his formula to try and get some liquid in that way.

The HV did sugges to try and add as much liquid as possible to his meals so amd just going to keep on persevering - offering him his bottle as normal and if he does not want it not worry about it.

Thanks again for you replies, I will keep you all posted on how it is going.

Thanks
Paula

REALLY EASY RECIPE YOU CAN DO IN THE MICRO -

2 cups Cooked rice
2 cups Milk
3 Eggs
half cup Raisins (optional)
half cup Granulated sugar
quater tsp Salt (optional)
tsp Vanilla extract
quater tsp Ground cinnamon or nutmeg

In microwave proof casserole or baking dish, mix together eggs, milk, sugar and salt. Stir in rice, raisins and vanilla. Cook uncovered on High 8 to 10 minutes. Stir every 1 to 2 minutes. Sprinkle with cinnamon or nutmeg and let stand about 30 minutes, without stirring. Serve warm or cold Serves 6 to 8.

Thanks Kelly

I will get cooking today - will let you know how it goes and whether DS likes it?

Quick question - can rice constipate? It is just that DS is very prone to consipation

Thanks for your help

no, I don't think so. Good luck with it!

Hi, I've been lurking a while but haven't posted before.

Just to say, my DS (14 months) was bf exclusively until 6 months, then food and bm until a year, then I stopped bf and the s*d would NOT and will not drink milk (or eat rice pudding etc), neither formula, cow's, follow on, nada, not from a bottle, not from a cup. My HV also said just stock up on the yoghurts and so on (he eats 3-4 a day) and plenty of cheese. He drinks, water and juice, but not milk.

My DP is the same, although he adds beer as well.

Don't worry about it (though I did for ages!)

Bugmum · 05/04/2006 11:56

Beer to his own diet, that is, not to DS's!!
