4mo always very sick after feeds

Dd (4m) will have a feed and about five minutes after, throw a lot of it back up. usually about half the amount but Often what looks like the full amount. Sometimes its just milk, sometimes it's a lot thicker, almost chalky.
She is currently formula fed, but i expressed with the odd ff for the first three months. She's on cow and gate 1st stage milk. She acted the same with breast milk too so I don't think it's the formula. She has 7oz approx every 3-3.5 hours, feeding on demand. Hv suggested giving her a dummy to encourage further swallowing, which worked at first, but makes no difference now. She is the 50th centile, but weighs the same as my fatty ds did at two months, so seems small to me. I don't know how she can be putting on weight, when nothing seems to stay in her.
Sorry for long post! Any advice on how to keep it down her/why she is doing it/ whether it's actually a problem would be greatly appreciated :)

Ps if you use cartons, do you know they know sell the large ready made bottles of formula in boots ( approx a days worth), has to be kep in fridge between feeds though

Some0ne · 05/09/2012 15:49

Our paed told us not to feed any more often than 4 hourly, to give DS's stomach a chance to empty between feeds. She thought little and often was entirely the wrong way to go with reflux.

Thickening formula shouldn't be done by ignoring the instructions on the box. Special thickeners like Cow and Gate Carobel are used, are perfectly safe, don't result in dehydration and can be very helpful.

I tried little and often this afternoon, but she will threw it all up. Sad

Yeah- I buy the bottles by the bucketload everytime i go to town! My mum reckons the cartons are worse to give cos they may contain extra additives to keep them fresh?? But I trust them more than me in case I lose count of scoops etc. I'll phone gp tomorrow, can usually get an appt on the day so fingers crossedSmile

I found that as well as keeping her upright, really long winding sessions and lots of time in the bouncer chair really helped. In our case DD being able to sit up, and then weaning (at five and a half months) were turning points. But she had been affected since birth and used to panic at feeds. Infant gaviscon mixed in with het formula definitely reduced the volume of vomit. Good luck at the doc.

Have you seen the Clevamama scoop? It really helped me and OH out. I didn't trust it to be on the money, so when I was making up a 6oz bottle I'd put 6 scoops into it. I knew where 6 scoops went up to so I knew if I'd added too much or too little. And if you lose count you can always tip it back in the box and start again. Though, you don't actually need that particular scoop to do that, just something of the right size to hold x scoops of formula.

I always found that cartoned milk was thicker than formula milk, and DD would always take a lot less of it. Not that she was any hungrier on days where we gave her cartons, she just needed less.

Just an update, took dd to clinic, she saw hv and dr, both said sounds like reflux. She has been prescribed gaviscon to be mixed with her feeds, to be reviewed after a month. If its not working, wer going to try a different formula.
Thanks everyone for your advice Grin

hi again sillyily,

My 14 week old has also been on infant Gaviscon and Lactulose, to no great effect. But then someone on here told me about Aptamil reflux Formula and the difference has been INCREDIBLE!! (I'm not on commission!) My DD has gone from constant vomiting to just occasional posseting. WOW.

I think Cow and Gate make one too.

Good luck and I hope your DD feels better soon.

My refluxy baby always pukes more if I sit her up Confused.

Is she actually heaving? If so check for TT.

sillyily · 13/09/2012 17:48

Def not tongue tie but she does heave occasionally, but not all the time.

Will definitely look into that formula, where can you get it from?

I also find she's sick more often when sat upright- but everyone is telling me to do that! I feed her at about a 45degree angle now. Then as soon as she gets moved she's sick Sad
