Shoe widths - do they often change? Will a shop give me new shoes if they mismeasured?

DD is 18mo. She pigeon toes and we are awaiting referral for her to see a physio so it's really important she gets good fitting shoes.

She has always been fitted as a 'G' width for her 3 previous pairs of shoes. Today I go to get her measured in my local children's shoe specialist and she is now apparently an 'E' . I didn't think anything at the time (or even realise or think about it until I got home and checked her other shoes) and so got the pair they said was a good fit. She has now worn the shoes. I'm now looking at them though and they look really snug, I think too tight in the width (but I know nothing about this stuff). The way the shoe is her skin looks like it's being squashed in IYKWIM (not explaining this well).

I just wondered (a) if it's usual or possible for someones feet to narrow 2 sizes in a few months and (b) if they will take the shoes back and give me a new pair given she's worn them already but that they gave me the wrong fit

Thanks

Just to add, other shoes have also been from same shoe shop

On would be Hmm too as an e is narrower than average. It can depend on the make but it sounds like a big jump to me. F is the average and most common width for girls.

E is very narrow. I would go back to the shop.

If it was Clarks, I would return the shoes and go somewhere else. A fitter there once told me that it was possible for a child's feet to shrink, after she measured him as smaller than the shoes he was wearing - which she had fitted him in and sold to me a couple of months before!

It sounds like a mistake to me.

Dd1 is an E and has very narrow feet.

Dd2 is a G and has very wide feet.

There is no way that dd2's feet would fit comfortably into her sister's shoes.

Ds2 has been a G for several years. This year they are finally an F. He's 9yrs old, so it's been very gradual.

Hmm Maybe I should go back then. I hope they accept used shoes though! DDs feet seem to take after mine, I've always had wide feet, so I was a bit surprised she had jumped into narrower shoes. I nearly picked him up on it in the shop but wasn't thinking straight and didn't quite register enough to realise and tbh I just trust that they will tell me which ones fit the best - that's why i go there and don't get any old ones!

alibaba it's a local independent shop who have a v good reputation IMO for fitting shoes. they sell clarks but they aren't clarks. So hopefully they will be OK with this. I guess I'll have to stop getting DD to wear the shoes and dig the shoe box out of the bin ( Blush ) and take them back and see what they say. I really won't be happy if they tell me it's a good fit if it isn't just so they don't have to give me a proper fitting shoe though. Has anyone ever had a successful outcome from something similar?

It may be okay, but I think it's a good idea to check.
Dd1 was consistantly G width from first shoes through to age 9. At about age 9 she did get an E width-the shoe fitter did explain that the shoes she'd chosen were gennerally fitting wide. She's then been generally measuring F width, occasionally getting insoles with F though.
Dd2 measures a F then needs D width/E with with insoles. I think she's relatively wide at the point they measure, but for actually fitting she needs narrower.
Ds just wants to get out as quickly as possible... Grin

I've returned worn shoes to Clinkards before because it isn't always obvious that there is a problem until they've worn them. They've always agreed and given us new ones without any argument.

Tiggles · 03/09/2012 15:28

I have taken worn shoes back to Clarks before. They said DS was an 8E and that the shoes they gave him fitted well. A week later after being extremely frustrated that the darn things kept falling off as he was walking I looked at his new shoes. They had given him a 9F Hmm. They were very happy to exchange them for me.

Lilicat1013 · 03/09/2012 16:46

I have also returned use shoes to Clarks, they were clearly measured incorrectly and falling off his feet.

I had the box and receipt, they were very helpful.

Thanks all. Will go later this week with shoes, box, and receipt in hand. DH looked and says they look OK but they look on the snug side of OK - like as if they would be OK if she were due a new pair, but since this is the new pair and we don't want to get another one in a couple of weeks hopefully they'll see this and sort us out.

DD's first walking shoes were a 2G at 11m. Since then she's been mostly F with one pair in E - a Mary Jane style with Velcro strap, the sides kind of collapsed outwards and gaped in the F. Mostly we buy t-bar and double Velcro strap trainer styles. So yes IME it is possible especially at a young age (DD was quite chubby, now on the slight side). But query it if you're not happy.
