why's it getting worse?

Posted this in sleep too, but think this section might be busier:

DS2 is coming up to 7 weeks old. When we brought him home he slept everywhere we plonked him during the day, for long stretches, no matter what noise. I remembered from ds1 that that would change and sure enough, he doesn't like being put down now anymore and naps in the sling most days. BUT, I don't remember the nights getting worse. DS1 was a terrible sleeper, but even then things seemed to get slowly, slowly better. At first ds2 slept 3 and 2 hour stretches at night (we even had a 5 1/2 stretch at 3 weeks), waking up at a very considerate 8am. That started shortening to 1 1/2 to 2 hour stretches over the last week or so, and last night it was every hour, and then awake for a good 40 mins, having to be soundly asleep before I could put him in cot. Any advice anyone?

Should say, depending on when he wakes up in the aft/early evening, ds2 is in bed by 7 - 8.30. He has a bath, is swaddled, fed and cuddled and goes down very happily and easily. He sleeps til I dream feed him between 10 and 11. He had then been sleeping for 2 or 3 hours before first next feed, but last night he was up from midnight hourly until 6ish.

I found that on the nights I dreamfed my dd she woke up more. You could try not doing it and see if he settles?

lucylookout · 02/09/2012 19:50

I did wonder about that. Last night he was sleeping quietly when I went to bed, but then he started his grunting and leg raising as soon as I put him down after his feed.

Yes yes yes!! I could have written this apart from my ds is 8 weeks! Even up to the waking every hour! We've tried a 6pm bedtime (still downstairs with us) so will report back!

Really mumtobe?! What about dream feeds? Do you do those? Growth spurt also occured to me, they're meant to get one around 6 weeks, but tbh I thought we'd had that Hmm

Well were bf but yeah, do feed at 10 11 ish, but from then he'll only get to 1ish, 2ish on a good night.... I blamed 6 week growth spurt and now 8 week!! X

MumToBeInJuly2012 · 02/09/2012 21:38

Oh and what's the squirming and leg kicking all about?! I can get barely any wind out of him so it may be that, but if it won't come out, what to do?!

drivingmisspotty · 02/09/2012 21:48

Just a message of hope. My DS (14 wks now) did all the leg kicking and squirming, I could never quite tell if he was windy or rooting. Tried Infacol but that didn't seem to help. 5 weeks ago he was waking at 2am, 4am, 5am, 6am. 3 weeks ago he slept through 8pm - 6am for the first time and has not looked back, it was really sudden! Sorry I don't have practical advice - except to repeat 'this too will pass'. Good luck!

lucylookout · 02/09/2012 22:19

Thanks misspotty, that is encouraging. I'd love to think it's just around the corner for us but feels years away! I've been using infacol too and sm not sure it's doing any good. I'm pretty sure it's wind that bothers ds as after much grunting and straining a little fart (really not worth all that effort!) will pop out. I've decided to not dream feed tonight, but I'm sitting in bed and ds is already getting restless and noisy so suspect we might be in for another long one. Mumtobe, maybe I'll see you back here later!

You are over thinking this. He's really little and I wouldnt be worrying about sleep patterns at this age. Particularly as he is is being breastfed, he needs to eat little and often. I think so many of our sleep expectations for young babies are unrealistic. I wouldn't worry about this at all. In a few weeks, it will have settled down.
