lying flat and spine development

Just wondered if any one knows much about this. I have found conflicting information on the internet some saying lying with a curved spine is more natural and some saying the opposite.

I know lying DD (5 weeks old) in a car seat for any length of time is bad as are some but not all slings.

We currently have a woven sling and she lies on a variety of mats at home. I also have a soft bouncy chair that she sometimes likes and she also seems to like lying arched back over my lap to look around her. Hmm

Are bouncy chairs ok as far as people know?

Car seat is 2 hrs before they should have a break. I would say for the bouncy chair it depends how much it reclines. Ours can be adjusted so whilst I wouldn't leave DD for long periods in it, if she did fall asleep I put it so it was almost flat
.
The slings I think it depends which type it is. You need to make us they re in the 'frog ' position when they're tiny. Also that their spine is curving naturally which is why most suitable for tiny babies are when they're facing you on your front. Im not an expert on that, bett check with someone who knows such things!

Just use a bit of common sense and don't leave her on one thing for hours on end (unless it's bed of course!)

I think variety's good as long as the baby's comfortable, sounds like she gets that! Presumably she's having good spells lying flat for sleep during the night/day at some point?

Both mine slept in a baby-hammock which allows for the same spinal curvature as being in the uterus and their spines are fine. It's also to do with weight distribution - car seats are seat-shaped, iyswim, so weight is resting on their bottom.

I agree with Zuleika. If the weight is resting on their bottom then it would not be recommended. Bouncy chairs are fine. I have a fisherprice one that reclines quite a bit and i find it perfect. Alternately i was also gifted a bright stars one and that seems to be pretty erect. So in the early weeks ppl suggested against the erect one and we actually did not use it. But i know ppl who have used those and without any time restriction. Babies would even nap in it all day. Though i would not recommend it but their children turned out just fine. So i would say dont worry too much. Enjoy the benefits the bouncy chair gives. Once ur baby starts rolling over n creeping, he will start getting frustrated in the chair anyway.

Thanks. She does get plenty of variety and sleeps on a flat mattress at night. I'll stop worrying Grin
