How do you make your child more confident in themselves

My DS seems to be uber confident in himself at home when its just mysef, himself and Dad but when he is with other kids he is so shy. He is utterly afraid of rejection from other children (what if they wont lay with me? Whta if they dont like me?) He supposes the worst before it happens. For example, we have just moved into a new area, a boy around the same age is 2 doors away, the boys mum nearly fell out her door trying to arrange a playdate, we werent even unpacked!grin I told him invite him round, it went from excitement to worry that the boy wont like him, to fear that the other boy would leave the house and not play.

We encourage everything he does, he is an only and gets all our attention. I make a point of never discouraging him in anything he does (as my mum did) but its statements like am I dumb? Am I funny enough? Will they like me? He is 6 ffs! What do you do to make your child more confident in himself?

How old is he? My DD is 8 now and she's VERY shy and tends towards anxiety too. The one thing that has REALLY helped her is joining Brownies. She LOVES it. Its great because they join a little group in the actual pack and they feel they have a friendship group with no arguments about it because it just iS.

She's in the Gnomes and to see her in her little group with the other kids is fab.

Arrange as many opportunities for him to meet with other children, sometimes they are shy because they have not much "social" practice.

And don't engage too much on his worries as this may "validate" them in his view.
