Hello,

I'm new to the forum and would appreciate some feedback to help calm my current nervous state! My daughter has been placed in a Pavlik harness at 16wks old after she was diagnosed with a Graf type 2c right hip. She has to wear the harness 24/7 and will have another ultrasound and scan on 28th Sept to see if it has made any difference. I'm so scared that the harness won't work, as she was much older going into it than most children. Does anyone have any knowledge of children being treated succesfully in the harness at such a late stage? Thanks in advance.

Hi! My dd went in one at 6 weeks so a bit earlier, but thought I'd share our experience. She had mild hip dysplasia in both hips, and I was truly heartbroken-sobbed for days! But she was fine- a couple restless nights at first as she couldnt kick out but she got used to it a lot quicker than me. She had 2 sets of check ups- second one she had the straps loosened and we could start weaning her off it by taking it off at bath time and for a kick around. After 12 weeks it came off and hasn't caused any development problems, in fact she was an early walker. She had difficulty getting used to her legs for a couple of days when it came off though bless her, but then found the freedom hilarious! My practical tips would be put a rolled up towel under her knees at night to rest her legs on, and chop up a couple of baby socks to cover the straps at her shoulders as they tended to rub a little. I have almost forgotten the 'harness days' tbh but it seemed devastating at the time. I hope the harness does the trick-I was told they had a great success rate and it certainly did the trick for us!

Another success here but again early user (5 weeks old). Dd had mild ddh in one hip and severe in the other. Sorry can't advise on older babies but think the ten weeks shouldn'

Sorry posted early - shouldn't make too much difference as not weight bearing / trying to crawl etc yet.

Thanks for your feedback. The first 2-3 days/nights were awful. It didn't help that she had got used to stretching her long legs (90th centile) and then was suddenly restricted. Her hip is sublaxated, which according to some sites is mild, as it's not actually dislocated but could dislocate over time. Hopefully, she'll have the same success as you both did. Roll on 28th Sept!
