Use of wrong words

My dd1 (6) still uses incorrect basic words in her speech, for example said-ed instead of said, and getted instead of got etc,. I gently correct her every time but should I be worried that she doesn't seem to remember and correct herself? Or is she still too young? Don't remember ds doing this.

English is a complex language and certain words which we use are complex to put together so for example, you use getted instead of got. Children do think logically and therefore if we took (or taked!) our language literally then she is correct in how she thinks. Almost all children thik and apeak this way it does take time to unlearn it. English lessons at school will help as she does more with the teachers.

ps - rather than correct her, do it subtly so for example if she says I getted a gold star today, just simply repeat what she meant so e.g you would say "oh really, you got a gold star today? well done". She is therefore hearing the correction but not realising it.

These kinds of errors are ones which indicate progress in learning, as they show that a rule (that of formation of past tense of regular verbs) has been recognised and is being applied. If you have no other concerns about her language I wouldn't worry.

Thanks for your replies, Helsi - I will try that next time she does it, as you say perhaps just hearing it will help her understand. Smile
