nighttime wetting- advice please

i need some help please. My ds1 was toilet trained at 3 with no problems but is 4.5 now and is still wet at night. The largest size nappy still fits him so we use those as he wets through pull ups. he often wets through the nappy as well. My partner is worried that we have somehow missed the boat on getting him dry at night and says he was dry after being day trained for about two nights and that maybe we should have taken the nappy off then. im not sure why we didnt do this- i suppose we thought if he was dry for two nights then we would just wait for another few days to be sure and then leave it off. but of course he was wet again on the third night and has never had a dry night since. so have we 'missed the boat'? i understand that being dry by night is a developmental and not a training issue but am just not sure what this really means in practice. the longer it goes on the more concerned we are. he's a slim child so the nappy still fits but what happens when it doesnt? pull ups will be useless as he gets so wet. i should say that we have had him at a kidney specialist as he had a suspected urinary tract infection but this turned out to be a false alarm. i spoke to the specialist about the night wetting and he said he had no concerns whatsover.

is there something we can do to help things along? or any suggestions about what we can do when the nappy gets too small which probably wont be too long now.

any advice welcome. thanks.

I think for boys it's not seen as a problem til 6/7 yrs. something to do with hormone production.

Don't worry. There's a hormone that's produced (vasopressin, I believe) and it comes along at varying ages. When your son's body is ready to be dry at night, he'll be dry. If you're worried about the nappies getting soaked, don't give him anything to drink after about 5pm and make sure he wees before putting it on at bedtime. Have you tried two nappies?
