Speech problems

My Ds was four in May. His speech is not as clear as his peers and I assumed for a long time that it was becasue she was a late talker. Just affter his 4th birthday I relaised that maybe there was a little more to it. Yesterday he had his first speech therapy appointment.

I was told that he laguage was fine and he makes clever sentences. His sppech is not fine. He has some developmental delays but also has some very bizzare sppech patterns. He needs a detailed assesment to work out whether these are input or output related.

Does anyone have any experince. I was told he would need a lot of therapy and it's far too early to say whether it will be effective or not. I really do not know what to expect.

hi there, sorry to hear this, it must be a stressful time for you. You may want to describe more specifically 'bizarre speech patterns' so that anyone here with any experience may be able to help/advise? also, when you say you 'were told his langauge was fine and he makes clever sentences' was this at the same assessment or previously?
best wishes :)

The language comment was made yesterday as his fisrt assesment.

Rahter than 'k' he will made the 't' sound which I was told was quite common.

Bizzare speech she mentioned was that instead of 'bridge' he says 'loosh' - therapist said it would take a lot of reseach to work out how he got those sounds from bridge!
So some of his speech followed delayed speech patterns others were not expected and interesting!

Have you had his hearing checked? I only ask because SALT in this area don't automatically check a child can hear all the speech sounds - ds3 is being monitored by SALT, he's 3 now, he has great language but unclear speech and had some bizare patterns (for airplane he said waawaa) - anyway, huge improvement after grommets at Christmas - 2.5yrs. I only ask because no amount of work will make sense if there is conductive hearing loss, no one suggested I get any of my ds's checked except my mum (teacher) - she was right Grin all 3 needed grommets.
