Do you think we should move our 2 year old in to a big bed?

This is why I ask. Taken on Sunday night after he had already escaped 3 times and appeared at the top of the stairs!

I misread your thread title as "a big shed" Grin

Might suit some messy 2 year olds!

Brilliant!! Can you drop the side of the cot to let him climb out but safely? That's what I had to do at 18 months. It gave me another 12 months of using the cot! If not then I'd move him into a bed with a safety side on in incase he rolls out in his sleep.

Well, we've moved the bedside drawers for now and that has stopped him. I did keep an eye on him for a while to make sure he didn't do a nose-dive to the floor!

I'm at work so can't watch it with sound but I can imagine him saying "Oh hi mum, didn't see you there, I was just going to bed..."

So cute Smile

Haha, it's cute with the sound but it's Dad, not Mum!

still getting the hang of the extrabits--

WorrisomeHeart · 22/08/2012 20:38

That's made me cry with laughter! Mostly because we're facing the same situation with 22 month DS - he doesn't have a handy chest of drawers to climb on, he just straddles the cot side and plunges over. I vote for the dropped cot side too - and maybe a stair gate over the door...

It like hes a super spy! The video was very funny. I would consider moving him into a big bed with the side rail, and maybe putting a safe guard on his bedroom door. Hes clearly very capable young boy so I wouldnt worry about him falling out of a big bed, I think he just wants a nose round. Maybe put all his toys out of reach so theres no fun for when he does climb down. Or let him pick his new bed as an incentive for him to stay in it. Themed bed always go down really well with kids, we got a jcb one for my youngest www.childrensfunkyfurniture.com/childrens-beds

My Ds1 climbed out at 18 months - couldn't work it out till we video'd him. He was squeezing himself between the wall and the side and sliding down then shimmy-ing sideways to get out. ( we'd had to move the cot out slightly to stop hime rattling the cot on the wall!)

after 3 nights of no sleep due to night time visits we put a gate on his door. he still appeared - he'd moved a chair in his room and climbed. Out came chair - still visiting us! He'd piled up his rug, cd player and toys and climbed over. after 4 nights of this we emptied his room of everything but the cot and a very heavy low bookshelf. That night we found him asleep next to the gate and the low bookshelf half way across the room !! Pmsl!! So cute!!

For Christ's sake, YES!

I moved DD at 17 months even for threatening to climb out. And sorry to put a dampener on it - yes, it is very cute - but I've heard horror stories about cots going over with babies too, so I didn't want to take any chances.

Also, dropping the side of the cot might sound like the easiest answer but actually they're far less likely to roll straight out if the toddler bed has a bit of a side to it. Or as in DD's new bed two little raised bits - head and foot. Not just a safety issue, but a staying in bed asleep issue, too.

Wow - the video is so funny and he did all that so easily!
Yes I would move him to a bigger bed and add a stair gate at the top of the stairs. Then you could add a bed rail for him not to fall but with a large space for him to get out of bed without risking to injure himself.

LotusOnTheLake · 24/08/2012 18:55

haha - he is so funny and very agile! Yes would agree on moving him to a big bed - I'd be too stressed if he fell badly from his cot.
