Forward facing pushchair

I read on the dummy thread someone mentioned backward facing prams to encourage speech. I had dd facing me up 'til maybe 5 or 6 months, maybe more then turned her forward as I thought it would be nice for her to see what's going on.

She's now one year. Should I turn her back round and chat to her while we walk? I thought I was doing what's best for her. Other people talk to her when we're in shops and stuff. What do you do?

I know it's probably a small issue but I'm interested in what the 'official' line is and also people's opinions and experiences.

Tia

I allow my dd to face forward and constantly chat to her regardless! I think as long as you are stimulating your dd with conversation then she will be fine. My dd turned 1 last month and I have always chatted to her, I have found that pretty much since her birthday her speech has just come on so quickly. I think interacting and reading to your little one is the best way to develop speech.

Personally I can't understand the drama of having a ff pushchair. I had one from six months and my DD much preferred to look at the world than me. She was only in it probably 20mins a day so I can't see how on earth that would have any impact on her speech. Others do seem to feel bizarrely strongly about this though!

We had a bfacing one and it was brilliant. Used to love chatting to them. Read on here once that when they are facing you it regulates their breathing and hormones.

DD was in a forward facing pushchair from the day she was too big for the carrycot of the pram.

Her speech is bloody brilliant she never stops yapping and DS (17w) goes in the forward facing buggy in the lie back position now as the rear facing pram is too big for our boot.

I've not given it a second thought - they spend such a short time in there in comparison to the time they spend out of it interacting with me and DH that really I don't think it makes a difference.

Did have a ff pushchair too and don't think either made much of a difference. Ended up with one very good talker and one, well not so good.

Good, that sort of confirms my thoughts too

Pressed send too soon. Thanks for replies. Yes I talk to dd loads and read books with her. Thought ff pushchair might benefit development in different ways, observing environment etc, and also giving her a bit of time on her own. Although possibly overthinking it Grin

Our pushchair does both and DD (10mo) has pretty much equal time each way. If she's bf then she spends a lot of time peering round the corner of the pushchair. She's really into pointing so when she's bf we talk more about what's going on, what's around etc. I spend all my time going 'yes, a car', 'yes, a shop', 'yes, that man is wearing glasses' etc etc. When I've had enough of the pointing games or just for a change we swap to ff and she can just watch the world go by. She sleeps better when bf though.
