How did you know if your DC were teething?

DS is only 4 months, but will occasionally start screaming as if in pain, he's also chewing on things much more than he was before (hands, toys, us, etc)

Everything I've read suggests this is very early for teething, so not sure if we are just reading it wrong. He's our first so it's totally possible.

If he is teething, then what can we do to help him?

DS started teething (when just over colic - thanks DS!) at 3 months and got his first tooth at 6.

Signs for DS: loose nappy contents; flushed cheeks; stuffing things in his mouth; difficult to settle; occasionally temperature.

Empusa · 15/08/2012 17:57

Ah, he's got 4 of those for definite.

Unsure on flushed cheeks and temperature as a) he has bad excema(sp?) on his cheeks and b) it's been hot any way.

He's also started doing this weird thing where he keeps sucking his cheek into his mouth?

People blame anything and everything on teething.

IMO it's not that big of a deal.

Babies cry, have weird nappies, temps etc- they can get this with (maybe) or without teething.

Debka - all very well to say. However, my ds had all of these more or less only when he was teething - altogether.

Perhaps it was the weather, or just one of those things - but it was weird that all the symptoms came at the same time and when he was older, just for the run up to getting a tooth.

Empusa · 15/08/2012 19:48

I understand that Debka, I'm just trying to rule out what it is that's making DS scream so much. Figure it's best to rule out the normal things like teething before anything else.

DH went out and got him some teething gel and a cooling teething ring, so we'll see if that helps.

Sorry, I was being remarkably unhelpful wasn't I Blush

Mine were obviously easy teethers.

Hope he's better soon x

Empusa - the ones you can put in the fridge are great later on - we had several and they were circulated - one in hand, one washed and going into the fridge, one in the fridge getting quite cold.

Debka - yes, you were very unhelpful! Grin Lucky you on the easy teething though... Mind you, DS has found the wobbly teeth stage very easy (certainly compared to some) and delights in showing DH who goes quite queasy at the sight after DS's shown me the latest one that's wobbling.
