4.4 yr old son in a day dream - Is this normal?

Was at my ds's nativity play today and I felt so sorry for him. He looked as though he was just in a dream most of the way through it. He was a shepherd so he didn't really have to say much but he was just so quiet compared to the other children)he is normally very bubbly etc. They did Christmas carols at the end etc and he sang away them ok but just concerned about him being in a trance.

Do you think I should mention my concerns to nursery teacher? Has anyone else come across this with their child?

Thanks

Stage fright?
Being a shepherd doesn't lend itself to much dramatic interpretation, as long as he perked up later don't worry

I have a 9m old that also seem to be in a trance, When he is like that I can pass my hand in front of his eyes and I don't even get a blink. Then he just "comes back" and everything is normal. Sometimes it's just one of his eyes to be "absent". I'm a bit worried about it, doesanybody has a simmilar experience with her baby? if so, have you got a diagnose of what it was?

Please talk to your GP about it.

It can (rarely) be a symptom of things but usually it's just 'one of those things'. Get it checked out - just in case.

I'm sure it's absolutely nothing but it'll put your mind at rest if nothing else!

HTH.

The problem is that if he doesn't do it in front of the dr or HV, they would say I am overreacting.. I mentioned about the eye not focusing and got an appointment next month to see the Orthoptist, at least one of the roblems will be checked up... but would like to keep this thread live just in case some body comes with something..

Chandra,

My ds had an episode like this, he was 5yo at the time, school had said that he tends to 'daydream', my MIL saw him in a trance like state on one occasion (didn't tell me until a week later!), I took him to the dr, who was reluctant at the time to refer him to the paediatrician, but wanted me to keep an eye on him and if I saw it happening again to go back and he would make a referral. I didn't see an episode, nor did MIL or school tell me about any more so we didn't go back.

Looking back I wish I'd insisted on the referral anyway, ds is 6 yo now and has recently had an appointment to see an optometrist who picked up the fact that some of the primitive reflexes that ds was born with hadn't been replaced by the postural reflexes, see here for more info .

As a result ds is now going to have an assessment when he goes back to school in January and some exercises drawn up for him to do at school and home which will hopefully sort out the problem.

I think if you are concerned go and see your gp and see if you can get a referral. Hope this helps and I've not scared you, apologies if I have.

Alisa, thanks, I have read the information on the site you suggested, I will keep it in in mind when I visit the orthoptist next month. How is your child doing now? is the problem gone?

No not yet, he hasn't had his assessment yet, he's got that on 7th Jan.
