When did you move your DC out of a cot and why?

DS is15 months. He sleeps happily in his cot, but we're vaguely wondering when we should be planning a move to a bed. Clearly he can't sleep in a cot forever!

What prompted you to move your DC into a bed?

And how on earth would we go about it... Do they just get up again once they have freedom? Do they fall out? The sides don't come off our cot, so we can't do it gradually iyswim.

Any advice/experiences would be useful, thank you!

I read somewhere that you should aim to keep them in a cot and sleeping bag until 3 unless they show signs of trying to escape! DS1 is a very good sleeper so I don't want to disrupt that. We ended up buying a second cot for DS2 as only had a 21 month gap.

2.2 for DD1 as we needed the cot for DD2, and 2.1 for DD2 as she was fully clean and dry so she was a big girl, and wanted a big girl bed like her sister. We bought them both as presents to reward them for good behaviour.

Neither girl has ever got out of bed once they were in, apart from DD1 will now go to the toilet on her own.

I wouldn't go any sooner than that as I think they would both have escaped if I had.
