Is there a way to weigh baby at home and it be accurate?

DD is 7 weeks old and hasn't been weighed since she was about 3 weeks old. I know she's growing well and gaining weight as she's getting very heavy now. But we're curious to see how much she weighs.

Clinic is a Thursday but it's hard to get to with 2 olders DCs and it being school holidays.

I did try taking her on the scales and taking my weight away from our combined weight but that says she's just put on 3lb which can't be right as she weighs an awful lot more than she did.

Is there anything we could try? We do have a wii fit.

Thanks.

You can buy second hand baby scales quite cheaply on eBay or similar.

We use a salmon scale (yes, really!) and a textile sling of the sort used to weigh babies in travelling clinics in developing countries. You weigh the baby in the sling then weigh the sling and subtract. Works well enough with our scale which is accurate to 50 grams...

Ps: the sling is homemade, a friend with a sewing machine ran it up quite easily

I wouldnt have thought she would have put on more than 3lbs in 4 weeks. The average weight gain per week in babies age between 2 weeks and 6 months is 5-8oz

She was 9lb at 5 days old and then 10lb 5oz at 22 days old. So 3lb in 4 weeks doesn't sound very much after 1lb 5oz in 17 days.

Stand on the scales / Wii Fit and weigh yourself. Then weigh yourself holding your baby and the difference in weight is how heavy she is. It might not give the same reading as the HV scales, but it will be consistently inaccurate, IYSWIM, so should give a good picture of whether she is putting on weight. Even using different "proper" scales can give different readings, so using the same equipment is the key to checking weight gain or loss.

her weight gain sounds pretty constant as she put on 21oz in 17 days so just over 1oz a day and now has put on 48oz in 4 weeks which comes out at more than 1½ oz a day so she is gaining more per week than she did at the start.

McKayz · 12/08/2012 13:58

That's ok then. It didn't sound very much as she seemed to put so much on at the start.
