95cm tall at 21 months - can this predict adult height?

I know this sound silly but I really don't want me DS to grow up to be freaky tall....

I am 5'8 and DH is 6'1 so not overly tall but at 21m DS is off the chart by a mile. I don't want him to be like 6'6!!!! Is it likely to slow or does tall child always mean tall adult?

He is over 34lbs as well (roughly) so 99th for weight but not as far up/off the chart as he is for height (although he looks very much in proportion).

Obviously nothing I can do about this but just wondering...!!!

I don't think the charts are a very good predictor, as they assume everyone follows the same steady growth pattern. I think looking at family heights will give a much better idea.

If I'd gone by the chart-based predictions at age 2, DS - who has always been on 98th/99th centile -would have been well over 6'6. But no one in our family is that tall - his dad was just under 5'9", I'm 5'5". But people in our family do tend to grow fast, hit puberty early and then stop. So DS is now 14, somewhere between 5'10" and 5'11", and I think he's pretty much stopped growing.

I was also tall for my age throughout childhood, but stopped by about age 12 and am now very average.

no!

DD1 was 98 cm at 24 months she is on the 91% now so not freakishly tall, she was "only" 102 cm at 3. She is 7 and 130 cm so completely normal.
I was too, 98 cm at 2, and I am 5'8" so not a giant.
DD2 is 102 cm at 2.5

DD is 2 and a half and is 86cm (25th centile) but HV reckons growth comes in spurts and she is due one I think (suddenly started eating like a horse).

Thanks for the replies! My brothers are 6'2 and 6'1 (I'm 5'8) but my parents are not particularly tall - 5'4 and 5'11.

DH is 6'1 with short parents 5'3 and 5'9 (I think).

Who knows!!!

I would like him to be over 6ft (which I'm sure he will be) but don't want him to be burdened with being so tall (6'4+ I guess?!)

IIRC there's supposed to be a (general) correlation between girls' height at about 2 and boys' height at about 2.5, but the likelihood of it being that accurate in the case of a specific child is much lower.

My 2.7 y.o. is on the 99th centile for height, but family heights range between about 5'3 and 6'1 (I'm 5'7 and DH is a smidge smaller) so I doubt he'll be really, really tall.

By way of comparison, he's even bigger on weight (above 99.6th centile) and has been for the last two years. Apparently most of the babies on DH's side of the family are enormous and chubby as babies and toddlers, but none of them would be classed as particularly heavy now they're adults.

Just going from memory, but doesn't the red book give a predicted height based on centiles - but with about half a foot either way margin of error?

I also believe that final height is down to when you go through puberty, which is the point at which bones start to fuse, or something like that. So, for instance, my mum was average height as a child but started her periods in primary school, and ended up a short arse.

Don't we all know boys who were the smallest in the class until some yr in secondary when they suddenly overtook nearly everyone? Or visa versa, the girls who soar to just over 5' tall before they left primary & then never grew another inch?

I don't think you can predict anything from toddler height.

Can give 16 anecdotal examples to prove my point.
