Comment has made me worry, talk some sense into me?

This is going to sound really silly but here goes. My daughter is 1 and starting to repeat everything that she hears. The other day she kept trying to pull my top down and I told her off saying something silly like 'will you stop trying to flash mummy's boobs?'. Since then she keeps pulling at my top and saying 'boos'. I have to admit, at first, I thought it was quite funny. Tonight she sat on my dad's knee, pulled his top forward and said 'boos'. Most people laughed but my aunt made a comment about how it was 'mortifying' and 'what would the ladies at nursery think if she did it to them?'. I know it sounds silly but she has made me worry that the ladies at nursery will think i'm a terrible mum for teaching her to say 'boobs'. I didn't mean too. Someone tell me I am being silly? And also, how I can stop her saying it?

Relax! Boos is not a bad thing for your DD to have learnt. To help her 'unlearn' it, don't react when she says it. There is nothing to be ashamed about if your daughter knows the names of body parts! The ladies at nursery will think it is cute/funny.
Really, relax!

LackingNameChangeInspiration · 10/08/2012 20:00

oh my goodness do you think there'll be anyone working at the nursery, apart from maybe a newly qualified girl, who hasn't has this happen to them a million times?

Springforward · 10/08/2012 20:00

Don't worry about it too much OP. You wouldn't believe some of the things my DS comes out with.... The nursery staff have heard it all before!

MrsFaffnBobbocks · 10/08/2012 20:01

It's perfectly ok for a one year old to do so. Children need to know the names of body parts. My one year old says "Booby" in the evening before her last feed

Your Aunt needs to lighten up a bit. Your dd and dad made me LOL!!! Nursery staff will not bat an eye. Promise.

MamaBear17 · 10/08/2012 20:01

Thank you! Smile My aunt is judgy and old; I know this, not sure why it made me worry so much.

What everyone else said!

wannabedomesticgoddess · 10/08/2012 20:02

The more fuss you make the more she will say it.

And you are being silly! Children say very silly things. Im sure the ladies at nursery have seen a lot worse!!

I can see why you are worrying btw, Im not criticising!!

My cousin was constantly grabbing his mums boobs at that age. Properly grabbing them :o. He tried to do it to me too. But its just a silly thing he grew out of!!

PurplePidjin · 10/08/2012 20:02
  1. it's called Echolalia and is a completely normal developmental stage

  2. Your aunt is a ridiculous prude

  3. The more of a fuss you make, the more dd will do it.

Could be worse - you could have got road rage and have a toddler endlessly repeating "cunt" at every opportunity :o

wannabedomesticgoddess · 10/08/2012 20:04

Oh and my daughter calls them boom booms :o

Shes 3.6 and I have no idea where she learnt that.

frustratedpants · 10/08/2012 20:05

You are being silly. Grin
and so was your aunt
It is a developmental stage to repeat words. You should be proud that your dd can repeat body parts. Smile perhaps you could use it as a starting point for all body parts (elbows, tummy, nose) if you haven't already that is.
Please don't worry about the nursery staff and what they think, I'm sure they would rather she said boobs than a swear word.

Ps my dd liked to pull tops down and poke boobs and say beep-beep. nanny was mortified when dd did it to her in sainsburys. Blush

MamaBear17 · 10/08/2012 20:06

Oh you have made me laugh a lot! Thank you everyone x

"Oh and my daughter calls them boom booms

Shes 3.6 and I have no idea where she learnt that."

OH!

my 3 YO and his friends say "boom boom" then run away laughing to each other as if they just said something rude! (same as they would say "poo poo head" IYKWIM

so now I know! its "toddler" for boobies! okay! thanks you've solved a riddle Grin

wannabedomesticgoddess · 10/08/2012 20:37

Shock I thought she was the only one!!

She must have learnt it in nursery then :o it really must be some sort of toddler slang!!

musttidyupmusttidyup · 10/08/2012 20:40

Was a bit Shock today to find DS1 (5) and his cousin with 'boobies' up their jumpers. They thought it was a hoot. So did DH. Grin

Yama · 10/08/2012 20:46

I wouldn't bother trying to help her to 'unlearn' what she has learned. There's nothing wrong with naming body parts. Nothing.

My one year old ds has loved naming boobies for months.

He pointed at me in the shower and said "Mummy's willy!" Totally fine.

Children don't need hang ups.

LackingNameChangeInspiration · 10/08/2012 20:48

Am I BU for not correcting DS when he calls nipples "belly buttons" Blush

cate16 · 10/08/2012 21:00

I had a three year old tell me 'mummies have boobies, daddies have pecs, and I [child] have pimples'

Always make me smile when I think about it.

knackeredmother · 10/08/2012 21:03

My 2 year old is still bf and regularly shouts, very loudly, in public places I WANT BOOBIES!
I wouldn't worry!

BabydollsMum · 10/08/2012 22:14

Sounds like your aunt's a prude. I suppose she thinks children should be seen but not heard too. Grrrr! That just makes me cross. How would anyone be offended by anything a 1yr old says? DD says boobies all the time (she means blueberries) AND she calls Makka Pakka bugger. Shock

BabydollsMum · 10/08/2012 22:16

Haha! Lacking DD got confused when she saw my friend breastfeeding and started feeding her toy piggy through her belly button!

5madthings · 10/08/2012 22:27

Lol its normal and nursery wont care.

To make you feel better when my ds1 was little i made the mistake of jokingly saying about him having 'titty two' when he fed on the second side! Yep you guessed it hr would feed on one side and the say 'titty two' Blush he was about 14mths! I judt ignored him when he said it and he gradually stopped.
