embarrassing taste in music

does anyone else's baby prefer embarrassing stuff or is it just mine? dh is setting five-month old ds bad example ;-) ds's favourite music is now bohemian bl**dy rhapsody/ something called the whister by JETHRO TULL for heaven's sake. oh, and The Darkness and the White Stripe video on MTV! dh goes through his 'comprehensive' CD collection while bathing ds but why does ds not prefer something a tad more baby-friendly or, if that's too much to ask, a little more credible??!! still, excited squeals and furious arm-waving and kicking while listening to this stuff is very cute...

My ds (3) is crazy about the guy who won Australian Idol and he is always singing his songs & copying his dance movements - IN PUBLIC. He attracted a large crowd recently in a department store when he decided to parade up and down the floor using a karaoke microphone... I was so embarrassed but could I stop him??!!! NOOOOOOOOO.

He does have us in fits of laughter sometimes though with his very tuneless singing

Evansmum it's not so much MY music, but dh's that I find embarrassing!! He was a dj in the 70's and still owns a huge collection of The Jackson 5, Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, the Captain & Tenille (if anyone even remembers them), Brotherhood of Man, etc etc - the list goes on. Plus he seems to have all the one-hit-wonders of the 70's & 80's...

Of course my own collection of music is much more tasteful

Festivefly, right with you on who let the dogs out!!! Both my dds love it. Dd1 (6) got the Pop party CD recently for her birthday and was singing-a la bloody Cheeky Girls- "touch my bum, don't be shy!!!". Needless to sat we skip that one now!?

And dd is obsessed with christmas songs and >cringe< kylie, sad thing is I went and bought the kylie ablum for her because she liked her so much!

Bad taste in music, where can I begin... the Andy Williams phase, the Michael Jackson phase, and the eminem phase spring to mind. He does like OK things as well however and also ( neither good or bad taste) likes singing hymns at full pelt, while maintaining he's doesn't believe in God and all that rubbish of course.

Both mine headbang to the Darkness in the back of the car - they are 1 and 3. They love it and ask for it to be turned up louder. I think its just the loudness of it and his semi operatic voice........

My lot are a bit 50/50. Ds1 likes Linkin Park and the Darkness, so he can air guitar to them (he's 5). In fact anything with rock guitar. Ds2 adores (really badly) Gareth Gates thanks to my oldes girl, but is being gently steered to Red hot Chili Peppers and Sean Paul. He can now recognise them in the opening secods of a song . My girls are a bit of a lost cause though. Enrique Iglesias, Blue, Stacey Orrico... shameful.

Yup, the takeaway song's been done in our house too. Dp taught em The Stranglers "Peaches" ("walkin on the beaches, lookin at the peaches, dee dee dum dum", which went down well on holiday.

My DS2's favourite song is "Don't Bring Me Down" by ELO.

Actually that's his second favourite, his favourite is "He's a Reptile" by the Soft Boys, which isn't embarrassing.

DS1 likes the Pogues, which is a bit problematical with all the swearing!

Thanks guys at least I know DS not alone in his appreciation of The Darkness... but no-one else seems to have a DH who plays their baby Queen and Jethro Tull Thing is DH actually has 500+ CDs, many far more credible, but this is what baby likes best...

DS loved Radiohead when in utero.

When he was about 3 months, he liked 'The War of the Worlds'

Now loves Rolling Stones(great) and, for some odd reason, the nursery rhyme 'Simple Simon'.

I must admit I prefer DS to like 'real' music rather than the plink-plink of the nursery rhyme CDs.

my daughter's keen on pretty mellow music so far (though she's only 14 months!). She likes the Cocteau Twins (in fact used to send her to sleep) and Air. She's showing a leaning towards 70's retro stuff too.

jinglesaur, actually jem from the Pogues is my daughter's god father so I'll tell him yours is a fan!!

When I was pregnant with ds twins that S Club song (in the nightclub) was on the music channels all the time. As I was the size of a baby whale and stuck on the sofa for most of the day they must have heard it dozens of times. So now when they hear it they smile.

But that isn't the worse. Under the age of one they loved Steps, DH bought the CD for them (secretly himself I am sure)!!!!! Now as they reach their 2nd birthday the taste has moved to Justin Timberlake and the Girls Aloud version of Jump. Still they use up loads of energy dancing around the livingroom.

If only I can get over the embarrassment - I'd love it if they were more interested in The White Stripes! That is more to my kind of music!

Fiarylou - my ds is a big Linkin Park fan and has asked for the latest album along with the Feeder one. He also is in to Queens of The Stoneage, Muse, Radiohead, Outkast, Aqualung, The Darkness and pretty much most of XFM's playlist. He has taken to yelling "Dad, Radiohead?Linkin Park are on the radio".... and then going "oh, he missed them" if dh doesn't get there in time. Oh yes, he is 3 and a half.

You are all soooo lucky, ds (20 months) like hard house (me I'm not to sure what makes it hard house or what ever) but dp assures me it's deff hard house that he likes.

With one arm raised above his head in a fist punching the air he scoots around with one foot in circles until he collapses and then gets up to do it again - even in public when it's being played in someones car

Dd (4) likes Barby girl by aqua and the usual who let the dogs out, imo yuck but at least it has real words!

DD 2.7yrs loves ELVIS and knows all the words and actions to Suspicious Minds, but also loves Where is the Love by the Black eye peas.

Willow, ds calls me everytime he hears The Chili Peppers, or Sean Paul too .

The other day I picked him up from nursery and was told by his teacher that they had been doing letters and she had asked them all if anyone knew of anything beginning with the letter M. DS had piped up, "I do. Mike from Linkin Park".

Oh yes, and he thinks that Mike's red hair is due to his eating too many carrots, and that they end their concerts by yelling, "Goodnight Wembley, eat up your vegetables". (On the Eat Up Your Vegetables tour, obviously. Which was along similar lines to Aqualung's equally uniquely named, Eat Up Your Pasta tour). Am I a dreadful mother for these lies?

Willow2, what a great idea! Friend of mine's parents used to tell her when the ice cream van played a tune it meant they'd sold out...
