3 year old playing with his willy - HELP!

My 3 yr old son discovered his willy about 3 months ago. I've really tried not to make a big deal about it, I never tell him it's dirty etc but have set a rule that he can only play with it at bedtime. I realise all boys (or at least most) play with their willies, but we're getting a bit concerned about how frequently and fervently (!) he plays with it. It isn't just a case of hands down his pants - he properly goes at it every evening (and probably morning - he never has his nappy on when he comes in to our room) and it is quite disturbing to hear him playing with it when I'm in the bedroom next door. Peeking in to his room, he looks like a horny teenager having a really good go!

I am really not a prude and happy for him discover his body without feeling embarassed - but I am starting to worry if this is entirely normal.

Can anyone tell me if their son does/has done this at this age? If other parents confirm that their sons play with theirs the same enthusiastic way - I'll feel sooooooooo much better!!

He hasn't got any older siblings, and am pretty certain he didn't pick this game up from nursery.

Does anyone have any advice???

My DS is 5, and became willy-obsessed as soon as the nappies came off. He has a favourite 'thing'. When he gets undressed at night, he runs around naked shouting 'waggle waggle waggle' and waggling it about. It truly is hilarious! At dinner time I have to ask him to take his hand out of his trousers because he's eating. I do not think he's left it alone for more than about a minute since he discovered it Grin

DP told me that DSS1 once nearly gave him a heart attack one morning when DP got downstairs. DSS1 was already down and whipped open his own dressing gown and shouted "Look Daddy!" - DSS1 had coloured the end of his willy with a green felt tip pen. Confused

Luckily it washed off half an hour later in the bath.

DSS1 was 6 at the time.

I have no DS, but when DD was at toddler group she used to sit slightly to one side on a ride on toy Grin and kind of tense and clench obv getting some sorta nice feeling! I was mortified! Took her to HV who was so nice (she still laughed a bit) and told me not to worry she would have a great time when she was older!! Shes 16 now btw....

dont worry my grandsons are just the same, infact grandson num 2 has just had a new baby sister and when his mummy changes her nappy he says baby no willy Grin.

OwcaDolly · 05/02/2013 12:06

My 15-month-old son has just discovered his willy - he pulls it and giggles when I change his nappy. It all looks very funny and innocent so no need for concern, however I'm worried about something else. When I ask him 'Where is your willy?' he happily points to it straightaway. When I ask 'Where is your head?' he has no idea.

Would that be some typical male behaviour?

It happens with girls too!
I reckon it's a design feature for the propagation of the species...

What a great thread, I've just laughed my socks off! On a more serious note, it's good to know what to expect in the future. DS has just started potty training and not suprisingly he's also discovered his willy. No doubt i'll be back on here soon with stories of my own to report!

Nancy66 · 05/02/2013 14:45

When DS was about 4 (and close to starting school) I told him that it was better if he played with his willy when he was by himself and not with other people.

For about six months afterwards he would say things like: 'Mum I'm going to my room to build Lego and play with my willy for a bit.'

DizziDoll · 10/05/2013 20:31

Another willy obsessed 3 year old ds here. He has a new baby sister and frequently breastfeeds his baby doll, copying me with dd. Today he decided to feed the doll from his willy...

MsGee · 10/05/2013 20:39

Be glad he's a boy and its all rather 'portable' . My DD used to hump the sofa and cry in frustration if it "didn't work". She tried to hump my leg once.

Stopped around 4ish. Not before she humped sofa with much glee in front of my poor old dad.

Our message was just that its fine but private and we don't need to see it.

UltimaThule · 10/05/2013 20:42

I'm always giving ds (9) the 'don't play with your willy in public' hand slice at groin level. he automatically withdraws his hand now for about three seconds

MedusaIsHavingaBadHairday · 11/05/2013 21:12

I remember shopping with a friend.. and turning round to find DS1 (aged 3) humping the corner of a clothes stand with mannequin on. Complete with red face and grunting!!

From the day he discovered his willy that was IT. He would shag the floor, the sofa and his hands were always down there!

He did grow out of doing this in public thankfully!!

TheCountessOlenska · 11/05/2013 21:42

Oh this thread is very reassuring, thank you OP!

MsGee, yes DD aged 3 will have a go on anything, so glad to hear yours grew out of the public displays!

I've got a two month old also and I swear he has found his willy already - hasn't even found his other hand yet!!

MonkeyingAroundTown · 11/05/2013 21:56

This thread has had me chuckling. I had no idea this is what little boys get up to. And girls for that matter. I am now dreading this stage. Think I will feel notified seeing my ds "wanking" and grunting at three. He is only eight months and he has found his Willy and had a good tug but nothing like what these 3 year old are doing....yet!!! Oh God. Some reassurance needed though it isn't being played with for every waking hour is it?

MonkeyingAroundTown · 11/05/2013 21:59

Mortified not notified!

sparkleshine · 12/05/2013 07:32

Reading these posts makes me feel me DS isn't very normal. He's 3.5 and not really interested in his willy. He'll occasionally have a brief fiddle and play in the bath or if he's naked for a bit but generally he's not bothered. No hands down pants or announcements about its erect status.

He does however hump the sofa, floor and bed with his hands on his groin area but hands are always outside his clothes. He'll get really flushed and make these heavy breathing noises but its not too noticeable and actually he does it less now than he did when he was 2!! We just tell him to get up and he does and its like nothing ever happened. He never says anything about his willy.
He would rather suck his thumb!

Obviously this will all change as he gets older.
