Croaky baby

3mo DS (1m corrected) has lost his voice - his cries are all hoarse and squeaky.

He isn't unwell, i.e. no cold or anything, this has just come on this week, coinciding with the hot weather, although I don't know if that could have anything to do with it.

He is quite a sicky baby, but I don't think he has reflux as he doesn't often express pain/discomfort when he is sick. Sometimes he brings milk back up just after he has had it, and other times he will sleep after a feed, but when he wakes he will bring up digested milk.

Has anyone else had a baby that lost its voice? How long did it take to come back? Is there anything I can do?

I am debating whether I should take him to the docs, but I don't know if there is any point Confused

If he were mine, I would take him to the GP today. A baby loosing its voice isn't normal and I would say it needs checking out.

My 3 month old had this. Turned out he had a throat infection. Cleared up on its own after a few days...always best to get it check out. Strangely enough it also happened in the hot weather

Doctors, definitely.

You mentioned reflux - as you prob know that can cause hoarseness in adults and children alike. Some kids who reflux a lot exhibit no pain, but if reflux was making him hoarse I think you would definitely expect other symptoms too.

What was it?????

TeaandHobnobs · 30/07/2012 11:08

Well I explained about the vomiting and the hoarse voice, and the GP said it was almost certainly reflux, especially as prem babies are more prone to it.

So we are going to give gaviscon a go...

Thanks everyone for your help
