How often does your toddler wee?

I have recently started potty training DS (2.4) and he is doing really well. He has only had a couple of wees in his pants and will now poo on the potty too (hooray!)

He has great baldder control - and this is where my concern lies...

He can easily go 5-6 hrs without weeing. I usually end up putting him on the potty and he will do a big wee - so he clearly needs to go. He will ask for the potty, but I am nervous that he is not going regularly enough and that this may cause him some problems (UTI etc).

For example...he went for a wee at about 5.30pm last night. He then had some juice and some milk before. No wee before bed. Dry all night. He said he did not want a wee when he woke up so I thought I'd leave it until he asked to go. However, I finally caved in at 9.30am and put him on the potty - he did a big wee straight away!!

So is this normal? Or a sign that he is not ready and needs to go back into nappies? He asks to wear his big boy pants and says a very firm NO if I offer him a nappy...

Thanks.

DS (2.9) goes 5-6 times a day.

I have to remind him to go on the potty sometimes but he will go when he needs to without prompting.

What happens if he has an accident? Does he ever go without being put on the potty? Does he drink much in the day? Try leaving him for a day - don't ask him or put him on the potty so he gets the idea?

He doesn't drink loads, but a drink is always available to him (on the table where he can easily access it, for example). I remind him to have a drink regularly, sometimes he'll say no please, other times he'll have a quick sip or finish the lot!

He has only had three wee accidents in 2 weeks. When they happened he said 'look, what's happening?' and I said 'you're having a wee wee!' We then cleaned him up etc. No drama. His last accident was on day 2 (now on day 17 ish).

He doesn't take himself to the potty but he does ask to go sometimes (if he needs a poo and when we are out and about normally). It just seems to be when we are at home that he prefers to hold it in!

I do just need to leave him to it. We are having a day to oursleves on Monday so I'll try it then...

Can you not remind him to do a wee at regular intervals - before/after sleeps and meals, before you go out, when you get in.

IWillOnlyEatBeans · 22/07/2012 14:20

If I ask him if he needs to go he says no.
If I tell him he has to go, then he will sit on the potty, sometimes he will wee, other times not!

I'm more than happy to do the reminding bit, but since he is capable of asking I thought I'd leave the ball a bit more in his court...

DS always says no when we ask so I don't now. I just ask him to try just before we go out.

Leaving him to it will help him make the connection if he needs to buy it could be he has the bladder of a camel (my DH doesn't go often but drinks plenty).

My dd1 is 2.5 and I trained her about two months ago. She has the bladder of a camel and only does about five wees in the day, although she wears a nappy at night and that is often soaking in the morning. She only goes when she tells me she needs, she will not go if I ask her only when she knows she needs and tells me so. I think some children are just capable of holding to in.

I think it's probably more apparent to me as I am pregnant, so wee every 5 minutes. Normal bladder control seems miraculous by comparison! :)
