dd (4) & ds (6) still dont quite get that opposite of small is big, oppos. of black is white, oppos. of thin is fat, etc. Can your child do this, how old when they "got" it?

about 3 and a half

small one can do big and small and night and day

Probably best to beat it into them, like I did

interesting question ego! Dunno, what an awful mum....I will test this one out today and keep you posted. My DS is three and a half.

tortoiseshell · 05/03/2006 13:04

2 for both children. They are both contrary children and like to sing songs with opposites - i.e. Bob the 'Breaker', can he break it, Bob the breaker, No he can't.

i think ds knows but the concept but doesn't understand the word opposite.Don't know if that makes sense?

brimfull · 05/03/2006 13:07

He's 3.5yrs

rummum · 05/03/2006 13:10

we do this quite often at preschool during circle time...
I'd say they get it by the time they start school.

The other day I said if mary is short... what am I... (expecting them to answer tall) and this little boy said lovely... ahhhh how could I correct him..Wink

Dd1 (4) is autistic and we taught her this recently - she understands all the "concrete" ones like big/little, hot/cold etc but is having difficulty understanding inside/outside. Dd2, however (who is 2) does understand inside/outside. I will be interested to see what people say...

singersgirl · 05/03/2006 13:41

I remember DS1 had an 'opposites' puzzle when he was about 2 and he seemed to get it then, but I don't know if he really understood or was just matching up the puzzle pieces.

egocentric, I can't answer because my dd is only 2.5. But if you are expecting your dd/ds to understand that big is to small what fat is to thin ie "opposite", that sounds like pretty advanced abstract reasoning stuff!

I can't remember really but ds2 is 3.4 now and he knows quite a few opposites - can't remember when he first did though.

madmarchhare · 05/03/2006 14:39

DS is 2.3 and does basic opposites.

egocentriczebra · 05/03/2006 21:30

wonder why my kids really don't get it. They are intrigued because we got an opposites book, but even after reading the books many times they still don't really understand.

DD is nearly 4 and has "done" opposites for nearly a year I think. Started with basic big and little. Getting more complex now. I think they have ebeen doing it again recently in nursery too as she has started using the term "opposite" a lot in the last few weeks/

Tommy · 05/03/2006 21:55

DS2 (2.6) knows basic ones I would say (we have a book that he really likes Wink)
