How old were your DC when you moved them from a cot to a bed?

My DS is 15 months and a big, very strong, physical little boy. He's not walking yet, but he's pulling himself up in his cot and trying to swing his legs over/climb out, so I'm worried about him falling out. I can't drop the cot level any further annoyingly.

He still seems far too young to be moved into a toddler bed, even the ones with the little side bars as these wouldn't stop him from falling out. But he's nearly outgrown his cot.

Can I ask how old your DC's were when you moved them into a proper bed? Is it something you need to build up to in case they're a bit scared? Any tips would be great.

Thanks!

DS is 2 and a half. We haven't moved him yet. He had a little phase a few months ago of climbing out. Since we put a gate on his door he's worked out its pointless.

We're in no hurry to move him.

Some of his little mates have moved recently.

Four - all three of them.

we moved DS at 20 months as he used to climb out of his cot.
Then when i put a stairgate accross his door, he climbed that too.

(He is fairly tall - 50th percentile, but seems to have incredible upper body strength)

We put him in a normal single bed - there was one in his room already. First night he fell out onto the carpet - was fine.
Now he sleeps ok in in, he usually comes and jumps into bed with me at 3am, so i have to put him back

My DS moved into a toddler bed at 14 months. It wasnt safe for him to be in the cot and he was big too so it was getting cramped in there. I just had bed rails on the top foot or so of the bed, where his head was, and this kept him from falling out when asleep. He couldnt walk til he was 21 months old so this didnt affect anything. I put cushions down either side of the bed in case he fell out, but TBH it didnt happen often at all. I figured its safer for him to fall less than a foot onto cushions than from the top of his cot.

dd was 2 and ds was 2½

brettgirl2 · 19/07/2012 19:47

If its not safe for him in a cot you dont have a choice. My 3 year old falls out of bed without the bars..... Its a nightmare on holiday I have to find another mattress as a crashmat Hmm

queenebay · 19/07/2012 19:49

Mine was 3

DT's were 20 months - they were both climbing out of their cot beds.

bluecarrot · 19/07/2012 19:53

Put the mattress on the floor for a few nights and see how it goes? If he rolls off, wont be far to fall.

DD was 13 months iirc. After hearing a bang, I went in to find her wedged head first between the wall and cot railings, a few inches from the ground. I dismantled it then and there (though it was a cot bed, so rebuilt it as such after a good nights sleep!)

Losingitall · 19/07/2012 19:55

Under 1. Both could climb out pull themselves over. I put a mattress in the floor then built the bed when they were 2

Desiderata · 19/07/2012 19:56

Mine was eighteen months. Children really don't fall out of beds too often.

Put pillows on the floor if you're worried.

TheBabeWithThePower · 19/07/2012 19:57

18 months. He'd been in a mini camp
Bed thing at nursery since 12 months. I put a stair gate across his door.

hifi · 19/07/2012 20:17

Both about 18 months.introduced full sized pillow into cot first, made a big deal of it. John Lewis have ones they recommend, not specifically for children but as good as.
Dismantled the cot then "unveiled" the bed. Both were very pleased. Put cushions on the floor in case they fell,dd1 fell out once,dd didn't. Dd1 didn't even realise for about 2 weeks she could actually get out herself.
Do be prepared for them popping into your bed tho.

amck5700 · 19/07/2012 20:34

first was about15 months - we needed the cot for No 2 who had grown out of the crib. We had the little Ikea toddler bed with the little bar across the side - however, it is so low to the ground it didn't really matter. he was fine in it and moved to a mid sleeper at about 2 and a half to let No2 have the toddler bed when he was about the 15/16 months - we went for the mid sleeper as although it is higher it has bars all round and he was fine in it - he wasn't a wild wee boy though. then we just put a stair gate over the room door so if they got out of bed it was safe for them to hang about in their rooms.

Flisspaps · 19/07/2012 22:25

23mo.

ThisIsMummyPig · 19/07/2012 22:48

DD1 at 2, because I needed the cot for DD2,

DD2 has gone this week at 2.2. She only stayed in her cot because we kept her in sleeping bags (gro-bag style) which kept her feet together. I actually never lowered it to the lowest level, as it meant she had further to fall, and she would have been out at 15 months.

BabydollsMum · 19/07/2012 22:50

DD's getting her 'big girl's bed' this weekend for the same reasons - except that she's on the smaller side so it's taken her 17 months to climb out. Good luck!
