Moving from a cot to a bed.

DS is very nearly two, DD is about 10 days. We put the bed up in DS's room a while ago, and he's been playing on it, having stories read to him on it etc., all in advance of his one day sleeping in it - which has now started. Last night was night 3. Part of me worried that now wasn't the best time, what with the recent arrival of DD, but every time, he has said that he wants to sleep in his bed, and that he does not want to sleep in his cot. So he has his story in his bed, and then songs, and then I've been sitting in his room until he falls asleep (to make sure that he stays in his bed - the first night he kept getting out.)
The hitch is that every night he's woken up early - 5.30 - totally distraught, trying (and failing) to get out of his bedroom (he isn't brilliant with the door handle.) This morning though was slightly different: he had climbed back into his cot, taking his Donkey and his pillows with him.

So what do I do know? Is he telling me in his own way that he's not ready yet for a bed, and wants to be in a cot still? (Despite his suggesting the bed every night?)
I'd like him to stay in the bed, as I'd like to be able to move DD into the cot at some point (and they'll be sharing a room, so I don't really want to take the cot out of it, and then move it back in, etc. etc.
Having an exhausted toddler, as well as me being tired from being up all night feeding etc., is not an ideal combination. And he is exhausted.

Yes he still sleeps at lunchtime, but it's not enough. And I can't be up breastfeeding at 4, finally get the baby back to sleep, and then get up with DS at 5,30 - I'm running on about 4 hours sleep a night at the moment . . . And haven't managed to nap while DS is sleeping as, sod's law, I've been feeding DD . . .
He can't fall out of the cot. There's a chair next to his cot, which is how he managed to get into it - but that doesn't work from the other way around.
