I am so pleased for dd1 and so proud of her achievement that I want to share

Dd1 is very very shy and has had problems talking outside the family, so much so that she receives one-to-one sessions with the learning support teacher once a week (has done so since about November).

It really seems to be working now. My mum helps out in the school and said that today dd1 was putting her hand up and answering questions, stood at the front of the class to play hangman on the board, and chatted freely with the other children.

Then this evening one of her schoolfriends rang her, and she chatted to her for about ten minutes, with no prompting needed (she has always needed help to use the phone up until now). After she finished her phone call, she said to me, "I like talking!" - oh, I could have cried, I felt so happy!

She is a very bright girl, works three years above her age level, but I feel more proud of her achievement in this area than anything else she has done - it has been hard work for her but now not only will she talk but likes doing it!!

happy mummy SmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmile

Aww - lovely girl Smile

You'll have problems getting her off the phone now, you know...but I bet you won't mind a bit!

Miaou · 03/03/2006 20:32

Not at all hunker - we told her she could ring anyone she wanted anytime - it's just so lovely to see her using it!

Her hangman word was "onomatopoeia" - pmsl!

Sparklemagic · 03/03/2006 22:17

miaou, sending hugs to you and her, well done - it must have been quite worrying at times but I tell you what - it makes me think even more than I did already that it is ALL about readiness with kids - no point in worrying, as long as they are getting appropriate support they will do things when they are good and ready and not before....

edodgy · 03/03/2006 22:18

Aww well done Miaou's dd this thread has made me smile Smile

roisin · 03/03/2006 22:26

Thanks everyone. I hope that Wallace sees this as she has issues with her dd and selective mutism.

A very belated well done to Miaou's dd1 just did a search for my name (prompted by another thread) and found this. Feel so chuffed for you How is she doing now?

danceswithmonkeys · 21/08/2006 13:41

WOW! What a bright spark! If we could bottle that warm feeling in your tummy when your child amazes you...we'd all be millionares

edam · 21/08/2006 13:46

Wow, well done to dd1. You must be thrilled. Bet learning support worker is going around with a huge grin on her face too.

Miaou · 21/08/2006 20:59

how lovely to see this thread again - thanks for pulling it up Wallace! Just to update you - she has gone from strength to strength. She took part in a Gaelic poetry speaking competition and came first (she had never spoken Gaelic before) - then recited her poem on stage in front of about 150 people!! It was very quiet but everyone was absolutely silent whilst they listened to her . Her support worker was there at the event and I went up to her afterwards to thank her for all her hard work with dd1 - it has certainly paid off! She is still very quietly spoken and doesn't "chat" much, but she's a world of difference from where she was at the beginning of the year.
