DD has always been super with the whole sleeping thing...is this now my comeuppance? Since moving to cot bed she has seen the escape route and will not now go to bed until phsically exhausted. We have tried sitting with her (she waits until we think she is asleep, then moved - cue smalll child following out of room); sneaking off (ha); putting her back to bed (screaming fits to wake the dead); bribery/co-ercion (we get a "look"). Please tell me it's just a phase...I need my sleep and cannot take a nap in the middle of the day!

We have a gate on DD's door. If she gets up she can't get out, only once have we found her asleep anywhere other than in her bed in the morning.

We had several screaming fits when leaving her in her room at first (and shortly after DS arrived) but no more.

Thank you. Do not like the idea of shutting her in (door closed), so perhaps relocation of stair gate is an idea. Will invest in ear plugs!

It took about 4 weeks with DS. We can't put a gate up so we did shut him in Sad after sitting with him just wasn't getting us anywhere. He basically ran around his room (happily) until he was shattered then fell asleep (on the floor a few times). He eventually seemed to realise that he was really tired in the morning because he'd gone to sleep so late, and settled back into being a good sleeper.

Good luck!

I think we were spoiled with the cot "can't escape, might as well sleep" of the past 12 months (since she could move!). Am sure carpet is quite relaxing... Thanks both!

it took a few weeks when we did the recent move from cot to bed for him to settle down from the excitment of being able to get up out of the bed - we have the door 'almost' shut and he knows he's not to run out of it, we have books and safe toys in his room for early morning waking, but it took and few weeks as I say of leading him back into the bed as he yelled excitdly in the doorway before he got the idea and just goes to sleep as normal again now. he's usually properly tired by bedtime as he doesnt nap during the day, so once he got over the excitment of the change it settled down :)
