Why does DS keep taking his tackle out of his nappy?

DS turned 2 this week. For the last 3 months or so, he has become increasingly determined to pull his willy out of his nappy and leave it poking over the waistband. If we don't spot this in time, pee goes all over his top and bottoms and if he's in bed, all over the bedding.
We've done all the obvious things - made sure it's lying comfortably when we put the nappy on, checked it's not sore, got him drinking plenty so his pee doesn't sting etc. He doesn't play with it, just liberates it and then gets on with whatever he was doing beforehand. This started at night time but is now happening during the day too.
Putting him in a one-piece vest under his PJ's at night stopped it for a bit, but then he worked out how to get his hand in through the leg hole. So we tried putting him to bed in his UV swimsuit with the long legs and zip up the back. Goodness knows how but he still managed to get it out. So, one piece vest AND UV suit ...and same result. Wet everything. The ONLY thing which has thus far been successful (tried it for the first time last night) is nappy + one piece vest + neoprene swim trunks + PJ bottom which is ridiculous and far from ideal. However, he moves around his cot a lot when he sleeps and I hate the thought of him soaking his bedsheet then moving in the night to lay his face on top of it.
Has anyone else had this problem and what advice can you share? I don't want to make a big deal of it with him and give him hang ups but this phase doesn't look set to pass any time soon and I'm out of ideas. Thanks

Am trying to fathom how a 2 year old's willy can stick out over the waistband of a nappy! Unless the nappy is very low slung. Bigger nappy maybe so it comes higher up his body?

Brawhen · 13/07/2012 14:54

Have you tried explaining the reason for keeping it in the nappy (try phrasing as a positive 'keep it in' rather than a negative 'don't stick it out'). Plus add a reward sticker on his jumper / PJs every time he is doing well leaving it in the right place?

2 is quite young, but he should be able to understand simple instructions I would think (if he chooses to of course...)

Brawhen · 13/07/2012 14:55

also - pull-up nappies are easier to hoik up higher on their body

ScarlettCrossbones · 13/07/2012 15:06

Oh surrey, I had to laugh, but my DS2 is exactly the same. He was in our bed this morning and I was woken to "Mummy! Wi...sticking...OUT!" I'm afraid I don't have much advice, I am just waiting for the phase to pass, and he only does it a couple of times a week I suppose, so not a huge amount of clearing up if he does happen to pee before I notice ... he also pulls it until it stretches to an EYE-WATERING length and then laughs as I recoil in horror!!!

HOWEVER, he also frequently sticks his hand down the back of his nappy when he has done a poo, which is somewhat less endearing. Really not sure what to do about that one as I can't follow him around all day waiting for him to do one. Sorry to hijack, but any advice on this too would be gratefully received! DC1 & 2 never did anything like this!

My son is 2 and a half and is obsessed with his Willy at the moment. He seems proud to own one and proceeds to show me it at every possible opportunity.

Pull ups are best as they go further up his body so he can't just lob it out. Hopefully it will pass

ChunkyPickle · 13/07/2012 15:14

Thankfully DS has only done this once, and found covering himself with wee a bit of a shock so hopefully he won't do it again.

Could he just be a bit hot in this weather? In warm weather DS has a good flap/pull/fiddle when his nappy comes off - I'd assumed that much like older males he was getting a bit of case of sweaty bits (swamp bollocks?)

If that's it I'm at a loss what you could do about it though.. is talc disapproved of in these circumstances?

brightonbleach · 13/07/2012 15:51

seconding the pull-up nappies here, they pull up to the waist or thereabouts, should be much harder to get ole wee willy winky out of those!!!!

hillyhilly · 13/07/2012 15:54

No advise sorry but you have given me a laugh at the thought of him going to bed trussed up in his vest, uv suit and neoprene!!!

brightonbleach · 13/07/2012 15:55

PS buy a size below waht you buy him in normal nappies so its snug and not loose on the waist...

TheOneWithTheHair · 13/07/2012 15:56

Do you think it might be time to potty train? He might be happier in pants.

Ds2 is 3 and loves playing with his. He also pulls it to an eye watering length.

AmberLeaf · 13/07/2012 16:02

I second it maybe being time for toilet training.

Also boys just do this! They start to play with it and then it becomes a nice (for him) habit/comforter.

SPsFanjoLovesChanningTatum · 13/07/2012 16:19

I don't the this passes now. Just seen mu brother and he had hus hands down his pants. He is 12!

LittleOne76 · 13/07/2012 20:05

OP, sorry, I know I shouldn't and I know it must be super frustrating but I can't help
But have a little giggle at your DS' determination..! I have a 10mo DS and he's just started playing with his willy in the bath. God knows why it is more interesting than the gazillion bath toys that are also in there with him. No advice but I hope it gets sorted soon.

3duracellbunnies · 13/07/2012 20:18

Don't hold your breath on it getting better soon. DS is 2yrs 10 mo and potty trained, now the access is even easier! He has been so dedicated in his pulling and stretching, that he now delights in getting his willie out out IYKWIM.

He now has no shame and will try to wee anywhere, he whips out his willie and off he goes (outside only). Putting things in car, turned round and saw a little stream heading towards the ice cream line after school today, opps!

Do you have some waterproof mats, you'll need them for nighttime anyway.

WorkShirker · 13/07/2012 21:06

We had this for a while with DS1, and it didn't last that long looking back, maybe 6 months at most. Can't help much for the daytimes (though vests with poppers helped) but at night he was in a zip-up sleepsuit so couldn't get in! Was over winter though so might be too hot at the mo.

surreycinderella · 18/07/2012 09:03

Thank you to everyone who posted a reply. We are dabbling with potty training (just suggesting he tries it before his bath with mixed results). The Pull Ups didn't quite do the trick as he sort of squishes the waistband down to get his hand inside and it stayed folded down!
We are now asking him to put his 'pee-pee to bed' in his nappy when we change him which seems to have helped a bit. Except now he keeps saying 'night night' to his groin... Fortunately this unseasonably cool weather means we can put him to bed in nappy + swim trunks with his UV suit on top of that and we've had 3 accident free nights.

Hi there my son is 2 and a half and he does this. Every time i look at him he has his hands in his nappy. He wets everywhere if I don't get to him in time. Today he's had 4 changes of clothes and I've even had to change my own clothes once today as he weed on me. I am hoping it's just a phase he is going through. Surrey Cinderella your son sounds like my son he pulls his winky and really stretches it and he seem to hurt it. Tried all types of nappys and clothinh luckily he dosant do it at night as yet. (Fingers crossed) if u find a solution plz let me know I feel I'm tearing my hair out .

BringMeTea123 · 10/07/2017 16:37

I definitely think he's ready for some potty training. I think you have to be lead by them. Not sure how you would tackle this at night as reasoning with a 2 year old must be near on impossible. Can you put some "big boy" pants over his nappy and explain it that way? Not sure if it would work but an idea x

splendide · 11/07/2017 11:48

My 2.5 year old has been doing this for a couple of weeks - exactly the same, just likes it peeping out the top of his nappy/ trousers. I do always notice because he shouts "look mummy my willy is peeping at you" so I get a heads up.

TeaTeaTea · 14/07/2017 22:33

My 20 month old DS has done this a couple of times but not to the same extent, when putting his nappy on (pull up or side taped) I do have to pull his hand out after though as seems to tuck or check his willy in the process.

When we get our next bout of warm weather try putting your DS in 'big boy' pants to run around the garden in, see if he pulls willy out as much. Wondering if it is a case of 'sticky bits', maybe if it's rubbing and getting sore then his solution is to pull it out of the way? Especially as you say he gets it out and then gets on with what he was doing before. So he's not getting it out to poke & play, he's rearranging himself to feel more comfortable.
I want to say try some talc powder too, but know it's not really used anymore.
