Need reassurance & advice 10 month old sitting but not much else

Hi I know that all babies progress at different speeds but I am a little concerned about DS.

He was late to sitting & started at around 8 months but since he mastered the art that's all he wants to do. No bum shuffling, no moving from sitting postion into crawl. He just sits.

If I put him on his front he will push himself backwards in circles but he will not put his weight onto his knees and crawl, he sort of drags himself. He has never gone from sitting position onto his front by himself.

He had an ULtrasound at 6wks to check for hip problems as his dad had CHD as a baby but that was all normal and if I lean him against the sofa he can carry his own weight.

I keep on reading books in the library telling me how I should be running around after him by now and that they will have found a way of getting around but my DS is quite happy sitting playing with the foam tiles. Babies much younger than him are so much more mobile at the baby groups I go to. Everyone says I should just enjoy this time as at least I know where he is, but I really want to see him develop

Anyone with similar experience who can reassure me he will decide to move soon? Any suggestions to help get him crawling/shuffling etc.

He might just skip the crawling stage its not unheard off Smile

Both my nephews didn't move until they were nearly 2yrs, they both decided just to get up and walk

Oh and stop reading the books Grin they cause nothing but panic

We're in the same boat. Our ds is almost a year old & not crawling. We were referred for physio by the hv. She hasn't found any reason for it which is reassuring. She has given some helpful ideas on handling & encouraging his progress. She also said he's perfectly normal just at the later end if developmental scale. So perhaps it'd be worth getting referred as well? Put your mind at rest?

Not personal experience, but a friend of mine has a son who didn't sit til 9 months and then showed no interest in crawling for another few months... now at 15 months he has caught up and is starting to walk. He was just a very laid back kind of baby and is still pretty happy and chilled out. As others have said if you're worried get him checked over, but chances are he'll get there in his own time, and in a year's time you won't be able to tell which of his friends crawled/walked earlier or later.

My DTD is one next week and isn't crawling yet. She sat up at 6 months, before her brother, but has since stayed sitting for a very long time!

She is trying to crawl though , so I'm not worried. I think weight bearing, or lack of, is more worrying, but she has started to do this in the last week or two.

If you can prop your DS up against the sofa, then he sounds ok to me.

My little boy is 12 mths in August, sitting around 6mths but still not crawling. He wriggles a lot but still doesnt like being on his front very much, Ive not been worried as I know all babies develop at different rates and people still say - 'oh thats boys for you - lazy' which I dont necessarily agree with. His speech however is really good, we count to from 1-9 and he says 10! I will mention to HV tho at this 12 mth check - to see if there is anything we need to pick up.

My friends dd didn't even attempt to crawl until 10.5 months, then she just started crawling one day - was like she had been practicing in secret!

I'm never a huge fan of internet "reassurance" - if you are at all concerned then it would be completely reasonable to speak to a HP and ask for an opinion.

That said, my DS1, although he sat at an average sort of age, didn't crawl until a week short of his first birthday (didn't even try to - just sat for months and months). He then walked a day or two shy of 16 months. He is just fine. With hindsight this is completely in keeping with his personality. He has never been a hugely physical child, but will sit and look at books (just as he did as a baby), or draw, or play lego or brio for hours. Physical challenges just aren't his thing (he was also 'competent' as soon as he started crawling / walking - i.e. a steady walker from the word go, unlike my much more gung-ho DS2 who walked far early but fell every few steps for ages).

I would say enjoy it Grin

My dd1 started crawling at 11 months, she started walking at 15 months, she sat and smiled and chatted and just loved watching what was going on around her. My ds started commando crawling at 4.5 months up in his knees at 6 months. Walking at 12 months. With dd1 I enjoyed a cuppa coffee in one place, I just didn't get coffee with ds!! Now I have dd2 she's 9.5 months and sits and smiles and sings... These things happen in their own time, don't get too absorbed by what the books say-they are quoting an average age.

My DD was similar, she did learn to crawl eventually (around 1yr old) but didn't do it that much! She was a late walker too, at 18 1/2mths.

She's 3 now and totally fine, it's just the late end of normal and a different personality.

My DS is totally different!

My ds was prem and should be 11 months . He doesn't crawl yet , he sat fairly late at 8 months and has just sat since . He can stand against the sofa and play and if you put him on his tummy he tries to move . He is under all sorts of hcp 's including the physio and they can't see any reason for it . My dd crawled at 7 months so I feel he is very behind but all my ds peers are only just crawling now at around a year so honestly I wouldn't worry .
