When to take the cot sides off?

DS (2.1) was complaining about being out in a sleeping bag so I went to Ikea on Friday and got him a duvet . He seems to be getting on well with it.... When do people think I should take his cotbed sides off? Will he start being difficult to get to bed or start running around in the morning? When did you take your child's cotbed sides off/transfer them to a toddler bed?

as soon as you think he is capable of climbing over them IMO, cant remember exactly when that was, think around that age

never did the toddler bed thing, did cot side down for a few weeks, then single bed with rail and step

first two nights were CARNAGE! he trashed the place, after that it was easier than before, can play for a bit in his room if he wakes early without shouting for us

when they could climb out so about 18m and 22m

they were actually better because they would play quietly in their room rather than scream and shout to be let up, and deliberately throwing things out of the cot just to shout me

pesky dcs!

When they start climbing over the sides or until you need the cot for baby number 2 :) We're going to try and keep him in there as long as possible...

He split his willy the other day climbing IN to his cot to get his favourite soft toy for a story after his bath... He was still naked you see. So I guess he is capable of climbing the sides. Hadn't thought of the repercussions of taking him out of the sleeping bag. Will chat to DH.... Don't want holiday to be a right nightmare trying to get him to bed in the evenings. Thanks for all the replies. Might revert to sleeping bag till after hols so we can contain him in a travel cot.

The sleeping bag dislike might be a temporary thing - keep trying. It keeps them in the cot for longer. We took the side off as he seemed grown up enough for it, not kamikaze tendencies.

  • I honestly like my child to develop but the cot to cotbed thing still gives me flashbacks ...!

DS1 was in his cotbed with the sides up until at least 2.8. He's never tried climbing out (unlike DS2, who's mastered this at 18 months, the little devil) and we wanted to keep him safe in a new house until he got used to it. He went into a duvet when the sides came off.

Thanks for the replies. Just posted about him on the potty training boards as he seems to have regressed since he hurt his willy so reckon keep the sides on for now as something may have upset him to cause him to lose bladder control and want to keep things simple for him. Will probably revert to bag as well.
