What age did your DC put on their own shoes?

DD is 2 in a few weeks and, despite multiple demonstrations, cannot put on her shoes on her own. they are a little bit faffy I admit
Her friend exactly the same age has been able to do it for months. I know all children develop differently but just wondered what the average age was?
She can get wellies on okish so knows in principle what to do!
I just end up getting frustrated with her cos she doesn't even try, just looks at me with a big grin then runs off
Am I expecting too much?!

I wouldn't worry too much. Do the shoes have vecro? I think you need to find shoes that easy to put on.

She is two years old and still a baby in many ways. I wouldn't worry to much.

DD put her own shoes on at 18 months. However I still dispair with my ten year old. (He can do it, but can't be arse) He was sitting on the step and asked his baby sister to put his shoes on for him. I think he was three years old when he learnt to put his shoes on, but he is still rubbish at tying laces.

I work in a day nursery, we expect that by the time DCs move to the preschool room, they at least try to put shoes on independently. Your DC has a whole year to learn, don't worry, it'll come.
Practice with slippers, sandals, far too large shoes etc. but keep it fun.
It is often hard for toddlers to even reach the back of their shoes to pull them over their heels, due to their lovely toddler tummiesGrin. As they approach 3, their limbs and backs get longer and their tummies recede a bit so they can more easily get into the position to pull shoes on. Even then, they can struggle with e.g. Converse, zip boots, buckles.

Er my little boy is 3.8 and I still put his shoes on!! He's probably spoilt! The only shoes he puts on himself are his crocs!!

I wouldn't worry. Mine can also only just take a t shirt off himself! He can change his own pj bottoms though (but can't put a ph top on).

We are having number 2 in nov and I guess it will all happen then. There's been no particular pressure for him to do it himself as he's an only child at the moment! It hasn't even crossed my mind! (bad parenting!)

My DD started making decent attempts at around 2.5 but its only now, a year on, that she can do it herself completely. And even now she still gets them on the wrong feet a lot.

Thats velcro though. And she finds wider sandally type shoes easier than trainers...the tongue being the main problem.

Dont worry really. It will come in time.

I think it's personality more than ability. DD has never let anybody do anything for her if she can at all help it. So from the point she could do her own shoes, she did them. You do NOT help her. At 2 I wouldn't worry in the slightest. In fact I'd enjoy the speed at which you can slot them on and go. Every morning before preschool it took dd an age to dress herself completely, do her hair, pack her bag etc. The upside is that at 5 she can get herself up and ready for school lightning fast. I am entirely redundant.

Oh and dd would NOT use velcro. Buckles or laces. Deep joy.

BobbysBeardOfWonder · 06/07/2012 12:42

Her shoes are Velcro - having newborn DS though means I really wish she would hurry up and learn Grin
I'm probably expecting too much Wink

DS2 is 2.5 and can put them on (velcro) but doesn't always get the right feet. Only started in the last month or so.

firawla · 06/07/2012 13:42

ds1 only started doing it at about 3. 2.7 yr old ds2 cant put his on either
i wouldnt worry too much

BeehavingBaby · 06/07/2012 13:45

4!

bacon · 06/07/2012 15:56

Yes, think you are expecting too much....DS2 is 3.5 years and only does it to suit. DS1 is 6 and he can play up with shoes when I'm in a rush.
