Parents of DC who are 'young' for their school year

Are your DC physically smaller than their peers? I'm wondering as DS is a July birthday (just finishing reception) and is a fair bit shorter than the children he has round for play dates, very much unlike his elder brother.

At nearly five do you think he'll have a growth spurt coming or do all children just grow at different times and he'll catch up soon?

I guess it depends on the child and the genetics. Both mine are young for year and DS1 has always been one of the smallest (and is actually small on those centile charts, as am I) and DS2 has always been towards the smaller end of average ie doesn't stand out as particularly small.

My son is young for his year but very tall. A friends child is starting in September and her birthday is end of August and she's as tall as my son - probably in age 5 clothes already. Both are young for their ages too.

Depends so much on the child. My dn and a friends dc were born on exactly the same day (late August birthday). One of them would look tall in the year above, the other would look tiny in the year below.

I think it would depend on if they were small for their age or not, and on what the other children in the class were like. DS was second youngest in year and average height but not the smallest by any means. There were also plenty of other children, a month or 2 older who were of similar height. There were 2 particularly tiny children in the class, one of whom I thought was some kind of prodigy as she was in top groups fore everything, but it turned out she was one of the oldest in year.

Roo is quite tall and is an August baby but he had his growth spurt at the end of last year - all of a sudden he needs 5-6yrs trousers for the length!

Think they just catch up when they are ready. DH was short until he hit puberty and now towers in at 6ft 2in but seeing him at 12/13 you'd think he would be short forever!!

NickNacks · 06/07/2012 16:49

My ds2 is small for his age. He's coming up for 6 (just finishing yr 1) and wears 3-4yrs school shirts and age 4 trousers. Def the smallest boy and there's one smaller girl but she has very petite parents. I don't know why as I'm 5'6" and his dad is 6'1" so neither of us are particularly short.

DD is an end of august birthday and on the tall side of average in her year. I am short and her Daddy is tall. DD2 is also August and is very average compared to her older year group peers.

MistyB · 08/07/2012 15:30

I have three short children and I think it is unlikely that they will catch up. Though if you have tall genes in the family, it is possible.

mankyscotslass · 08/07/2012 15:37

DS1 is a middle of May birthday, there are only 5 younger than him in his class. He is one of the smallest DC in his year group and has followed the 25th Centile since he was a year old.

I'm small, but DH is 6ft, and speaking to his mum she said that DH was small for his age until he hit 14, when he had a massive growth spurt.

NoComet · 08/07/2012 15:41

I think it's better if they are about the right hight for their age and therefore look small.

DF's DS was board in August, but took after his rugby playing Dad.

Both she and the teachers tended to forget he was the youngest in that year by several weeks.

She worried far too much about his phonics and reading, he caught up in Y1.

Born in August Blush

TheFallenMadonna · 08/07/2012 15:43

Nope. My DS is v tall for his year group. But I am tall, and DH is tall-ish.

smokinaces · 08/07/2012 15:47

Ds1 is an august born and second youngest in his year. He is also the second tallest and the same height as some year threes. People often think he is a lot older than he is because of his height. Hell be taller than me by the time he is ten.

InMySpareTime · 08/07/2012 15:55

DS is third oldest in Y5, but is the shortest child in the Junior schoolBlush He's 10.10 and just had a growth spurt to grow into some age 8 trousers (his school uniform is age 7 and a bit long though).
Statistically autumn born DCs will be taller than summer born, but genetics counts for more than that.

AdventuresWithVoles · 08/07/2012 15:59

My only summer born DS is tall & "solid", never a shrimp.

Other DSs (autumn-winter birthdays) started reception as nearly the very smallest; DS1 overtook most the other boys in y5 or so. DH & me are both taller than average. Kids just so do not grow steadily, ime.

Milliways · 08/07/2012 16:09

DS is a mid August birthday. In Yr7 he was average (ish) but as his friends all had their pre-teen spurts he was left well behind. He called his friends his "Minders" as they towered around him.

At 15 he was one of the snallest, then he turned 16 and grew like a weed, caught up and overtook his friends. He is now pushing 6' and still going. Now he just wants to learn to drive as his friends have all passed their tests.

UnSocialite · 08/07/2012 17:01

That's really interesting, thanks! DH and I are both very average tbh - Im 5'5 and he's 5'11.
