DS narrowing his food range – any physiological reasons why?

DS is nearly 6. He eats veggie food with fish occasionally, but no meat ? a household choice. He used to eat a wide range of foods but over the past few months, he's refusing a lot of things.

Mealtimes are calm so I don't think it's a control thing. I know there are a lot of threads on here about picky eaters but I'm just intellectually curious as to why he's doing it. Is it something that's happening at this stage in his development, i.e. physiological changes such as taste bud development, testosterone surge etc?

  • He refuses to eat potato in any form.
  • Will only eat rice/risotto if it is tomato based.
  • Won't eat pasta with a cheesy sauce.
  • Can detect a molecule of black/white pepper in food and will then refuse to eat it.
  • Anything that'll get stuck in his teeth when he eats them ? i.e. nuts, sweets.
  • Won't eat any messy food or food he has to touch and physically shudders if he has to. So won't even eat a cupcake in a paper case as it'll mean he'll have to touch the cake at some point.

However, on a positive note, he will eat:

  • smoked salmon
  • prawns
  • black olives
  • haddock
  • garlic (and cooked onions if I hide them!)
  • houmous
  • brown bread with seeds (including linseeds) etc
  • sandwich pickles and
  • prefers Green and Blacks chocolate to cheaper brands (so like his mother! Grin)

Thanks!

Oh, and he's also now only eating apples, grapes and bananas when previously he'd eat pretty much any fruit I would give him.

A friend of mine with older boys says that hers really narrowed their foods and then over time expanded them again. Did anyone else find this?

I have no clue why, but yes, food range narrowed and then expanded. Bloody long time between the two though ...

Oh no, Bertha! How 'long' is 'long'?!

It's so wearing. He's always been fab at eating in restaurants etc with us as we could usually find something on the menu. But now we dread it.
