Nappies

Apologies if this is in the wrong section but can someone explain nappies to me.

Ok, so I know what they do lol, but the types are confusing me. I'm a pampers fan as I think, what with the various deals you can get, they're just as cost effective as own brands. But I'm a bit stumped with the different types.

DS is size 3. He pees a lot but only poops once every other day/ every day if we're lucky. He's 15 weeks and just over 5kg.

Until this week we used New Baby nappies but as he's now size 3 they're more expensive. There are good deals on Simply Dry (orange packet) at the mo so we've stocked up on them. When he was in new baby he had to be changed quickly into fresh nappies as he couldn't abide being wet. With simply dry he's happier to be changed less often but I don't know if it's because this type is more absorbent or if it's just because of the bigger size.

To my mind New Baby are more comfortable but Simply Dry are quite good but I don't know how they'll go when he poops more often. I don't really understand what's different between the two types - surely everyone wants cheaper more absorbent nappies. I'm worried that for the sake of price I'm making him less comfy, although he seems happier, if anything.

Can anyone clue me in to the differences in types. I mean, why would anyone use anything other than the simply dry range?

Can you tell I'm a FTM lol?

I did exactly the same as you and baby dry as much more absorbent. They also do active fit which is gods when baby is crawling but does depend if they fit well in baby. I have tried lots of different ones and have always ended up happiest with them. Give other a try too if you want to check Smile

wishiwasonholiday · 05/07/2012 06:39

I found simply dry awful they seem to irritate ds' bum and baby dry leak after a couple of wees. The best for ds are active fit but maybe because he has skinny legs and they fit better. He's 2 though so bigger than your dc but we've just stuck with active fit. Quite often the cheapest deal is on amazon cos if you subscribe ( you can cancel after the first delivery) you get 10% off and free delivery, also saves carrying them home.

It can be incredibly confusing in a supermarket nappy aisle, especially to a brain befuddled by no sleep for days/weeks/months.

I'll let you into a little secret: most of the differences between nappies are artifical, marketing inspired 'USP's (Unique Selling Points) which don't actually make much difference

We tent to lose our consumer-savviness a bit when it comes to children's products. Any of the nappy brands and styles, so long as it's not ridiculously too big or too small (and there's masses of overlap so it's difficult to get that wrong) will do the basic job. The rest is just fluff, made up by marketeers to attract your attention and loyalty in a crouded market, no more meaningful than the 'here comes the science' bit in the advert for an overpricesd shampoo.

I'm with Heads. Ultimately they're designed to hold wee and poo and they all do that so there you go! Grin

And for the record, I get my nappies from Lidl... because they're seriously cheap! Don't seem to leak much either.

Huffles · 05/07/2012 09:24

I used to be a huge fan of pampers - they were fantastic with my older two children (now 7 and 4). But now I can't help feeling that they've gone down hill a bit. I still use them on my ten month old but I find they don't hold in near enough as much as they used to.

mejon · 05/07/2012 10:52

From memory the new baby ones had a sort of mesh in them that the poo would go through (as it tends to be more liquid in the early days). The Baby dry ones are more absorbent but the poo stays on the surface. I only change DD2 when she's done a poo or when the wet nappy is getting a bit heavy! I'm sticking with Pampers for the time being. We only have a Morrisons supermarket locally and I don't really rate their nappies. I stock up whenever I see an offer - Boots 3 for 2 on mega boxes for example.

I saw the Simply Dry for the first time today - at the moment we use Baby Dry at Night, Active fit during the day. Are Simply Dry a budget version - I couldn't work out the difference apart from the price?

Sorry to highjack op!

tootiredtothinkofanickname · 05/07/2012 20:58

Simply Dry are the budget version. I used them for a while when DS was about 7 months (16 months now) and they were ok, but many people say they can cause nappy rash and leak. Now I'm using Lidl's own brand, they are called Toujours and I'm very happy with them. I've stuck with Baby Dry for night time, but when they run out this time I'll give the Lidl nappies a go for night time as well.

rrreow · 06/07/2012 14:19

I used Simply Dry until DS was 1 (when we switched to reusables). Simply Dry are the budget version. The Baby Dry ones may be more absorbent but Simply Dry lasted through the night for us no problem and no leaks in the day so no reason to spend more money. No nappy rash related to the nappy, but do have to always make sure DS bum was dry before putting the nappy on. I would've gone for supermarket/chemists own brand to save money, but all the one we tried leaked on our DS.

Stannwigg · 06/07/2012 14:26

I was always a Pampers fan until I discovered Lidls. Have never ever had one leak, they're cheap as chips and are just brilliant. Never would've believed it but it's true.

TheSurgeonsMate · 06/07/2012 14:28

The brazen refusal of Pampers to explain the difference between all these types of nappies was one of the reasons why I stopped using them!

I'm not very price sensitive, though, I use Nature Babycare nappies because I like the patterns on them Blush.

Livened · 06/07/2012 21:12

Baby dry and simply dry always leaked for us, now ds is 6 months and 20lbs and on size 4 active fit which see him through the night for over 12 hours ;)

littleweed10 · 06/07/2012 21:17

Aldi nappies are amazing value too, and I did try every brand. Active fit was the best pampers type for us

FuzzzyDuckosaurus · 06/07/2012 21:49

I use morrisons own cheapy brand. £1.46ish for 20. Absolutely no problems on 9 month old dd Smile

ceeveebee · 06/07/2012 22:02

£1.46 for 20?!?! That's less than half the cost of pampers

FuzzzyDuckosaurus · 06/07/2012 22:26

Yup! Honestly, wouldn't pay full price for pampers/huggies now. I do try to use washables as much as I can but always have morrisons on stand by. Dd is 9 months and about 20lbs. I use the size 5 on her. Honestly, give them a go Smile

gallicgirl · 06/07/2012 22:39

Lidl nappies are fab and consistently cheaper than the main brands even when they're on offer.

Cosmosis · 06/07/2012 23:05

I use washables mostly but either also or Tesco own brand for sposies.

Gabeesh · 10/07/2012 23:20

Thanks everyone for all your replies, interesting discussions! Really wish I could get to a Lidls now, I'd give them a go!

DS had the mother of all 'code brown's today and it held it all in just about. Think I might stick with these for a bit and see how they go. Thankfully he is being changed less now than he use to be, so I might be able to experiment a bit more when we've used up the current batch.
