How long before she escapes?

I have a petite 16.5 month old DD who climbed out of the bath this weekend. She's now discovered (via the same method) that she can get her foot up on the side of her cot. Obviously we have the sides the highest they'll go. If you've had an escaping baby, how long was it from getting the foot up to actually escaping? Or should I start putting some crash mats down now? Oh and she can get out of a Gro Bag in 3 seconds Houdini-style too, so that won't stop her.

Yes, I'd be putting something soft on the floor by her cot and maybe sticking a childgate on her door too.....

If she's getting her foot up, she'll be out at least a day before you decide to do something about it....

We took the sides off DSs cot and turned it into a bed when he was 15months for the same reason. Obviously you have to consider how to keep her safe out of the cot, but its safer not to fall from the top of a cot side.

Oh crikey! Thanks. Is it better to get her into a toddler bed sooner than later then? I mean, even with cushions or a mattress down she could still hurt herself and of course it could be quite traumatic...

I would be removing the sides, yes.
Just be prepared to teach her to stay in her own bed (if that's what you want). It will take time.
A tall stairgate is a good plan too, assuming she can't get over that.

I moved my DS to a single bed at 16 months after walking in one morning to see him half over the side and the cot tipping. He was big for his age and his weight just took the cot over with him. Thankfully I grabbed it just in time and no harm done but dread to think how hurt he could've been if I'd been slower to wake after hearing him over the monitor!

BabydollsMum · 04/07/2012 14:03

Oh my God, I didn't even think of that. Thankfully DD is on the small side but you never know do you?

I agree you need to put her in a bed. The top of a cot side is quite a height to fall from, especially if there happens to be something hard like a toy on the floor below.

If you're worried she'll fall out of bed in the night you can get sides that slip under the mattress but don't go the full length of the bed so she can still slide off safely.
