We have our first appointment this week, for dd who is 2.1. Just wondering what to expect and if I should have anything prepared/take anything along with me? I am a bit worried about it all tbh.
TIA

Assuming that your dd isn't talking much (like my ds) you don't need to take anything BUT there will be a lot of questions that you might want to be ready to answer. The ST wanted to know what his first word was, when he started making noises, any family history of speech therapy, has he had hearing tests, does he dribble when she eats and so on. She also played with DS and asked him some questions such as who is eating (from a selection of pictures)? and can you put the saucer on the spoon? My DS was 2 and 9 months with his first appt btw. He is going to receive ST through nursery in September.

Our first appointment was with other families and children, The kids got to play with toys and the SaLT talked us through some of the tips to improve communications. If it's one to one, they might ask you questions about your child's milestones. There might be some discussions to check if your child understands words and 'commands' like previous poster said, and also there might be a hearing test recommended or follow up appointment. If you have taken notes in your red book about the various milestones, you can take it as well.

thank you both for letting me know what to expect. well we have had our appointment and it was as you outlined frog.

it was 1-1 session, the therapist played with DD, checking her understanding of objects / actions seeing if she could put the dog in the basket, spoon in the bowl that kind of thing. there werent that many questions apart from when was her first word (which i couldnt remember exactly Blush).

she is delayed in her speech and we will be reviewed again when shes 2.5yrs - with the possibilty of going to some language group sessions. i am hoping that she will catch up as the judge-y looks and comments from others are driving me mad!

Sorry to hear that you've received judgey looks, surprising actually bearing in mind how many young children have a delay in their speech. If it weren't so common there wouldn't be speech therapists dealing with young children would there?
I am looking forward to the therapy starting. DS is developing his speech but it's all very slooooowww....
